Have single-player FPS gone backwards?

I use to play a lot of Counterstrike on steam and other fps' in the old days but havent played FPS that much anymore since I am more into RPG or strategy stuff now.

How is that in any way relevant to the thread topic? The topic isn't 'what games did you play,' it's entitled 'have single-player FPS gone backwards?' The core of it also being single-player FPSes, which Counter-Strike is not.

Don't take this the wrong way, Ichigo, but if you're not going to post something of value in a thread, don't post in it at all. It's pretty annoying when a thread shows up in the What's New section, just for the post that put it there to be yet another inane post from you.

So when you talk about a game its suddenly all perfect and dandy.

Counterstrike could be played against bots so yes it was technically single player too, but anyway not posting in any topics you have already been in in gaming section.

*throws water on all discussing the nonsense in the thread*

Keep calm, and stay on topic.:)

The difference is I stick to the thread topic. You don't even make any attempts at contributing to the thread's topic. You basically told us what games you used to play and what you play now. Because that totally answers the question of 'have single-player FPS gone backwards.'

I, for one, am getting pretty tired of the amount of off-topic spam you get away with on a daily basis. I'm not going to presume to speak for anyone else, but I know of at least a few others who feel the same about your posts. So now I'm asking you politely, please stop the spam. If you type out a post, stop, read through it again and ask yourself whether it contributes anything to the thread topic. If it does, hit the post button. If it doesn't, hit the cancel button.

Just admit you like fighting against me I barely post here and its always get negative stuff so why should I even attempt to post more info on the topic.

Folk are trying to help you with some good advice. Perhaps try and understand why they are being critical of what you posted.

Three ways to fix FPS Singleplayer games:

-Quicktime events was never a good idea. Gaming industry JUST STOP IT!! Its over used and not really a good way to try and tell a story. Its forced and takes control away from the player.

- Any modern game that has a massive multiplayer element. Do not buy it for the singleplayer experience. Those game just use single player to try and bait new players to play the multiplayer. Its just an intro into the mechanics and game style. They do not develop multiplayer games and package them with a full developed story and detailed crafted singleplayer. Those days are over.

- FPS games do not belong on consoles. The ported FPS games that work are few and far, very far apart. If you pick up a FPS game and you see that same title on the PS or xbox shelf. Don't buy it.

Buy Indi and stay away from triple A titles. Most of the better writing and original titles can be found there. ^_^

It was an answer to the topic that I havent played them recently so not sure if they gone backwards or not.

Wish I was still into fps' and that I typed my whole long list of single player fps to get my point accross thought you guys were able to read between the lines.

TB did a vlog a few days ago where he expounds a little on his FPS commentary. I think we're talking more about corridor shooters than open world FPS like Farcry 3. It takes much more thought to make a proper and exciting corridor shooter. Yes just like that map that was posted, FPS then and now. It is much easier to make an open world FPS. Technically it is superior back it takes real skill to make a corridor shooter like they used to. Just think about the glut of ammo nowadays.

Also with the secrets in the level. I think the practice was stopped because publishers, for lack of knowledge on my part, considered it a waste of time and effort to put something out of the way.

I played doom 2 when I came out on xbox arcade. If you ignore the graphics it is still loads of fun, its basically a survival horror. You keep your guns, ammo, health between levels, so if you use too much ammo, you will have to resort to melee. Its really tough to finish, I miss games being difficult in the way doom was.

Personally i think we have room for both types of FPS. Would be sad to lose either. I like the corridor shooters because they are more a story you fellow (Kind of like a book or movie), where as open world is your own story.

Fear 3 was also an absolutely epic game and is on steam sale for $5 at the moment. It has a great co-op mode as well if you guys haven't tried it out before.

There's valid arguments on both sides. I do believe that modern shooters have gone backwards in a lot of aspects, but it has also advanced quite a bit.

The main issues I have with modern shooters is :

The "welcome to the game" crap it starts with. The "this is how you aim", "press this button to do this" press that button to do that hand holding rubbish. All i want to do is stick the damn disk in and start shooting things. Story advancing cut scenes. Now while I get that it makes the transition between levels and sublevels smoother. It does slow you down if you open a door, experience 5min of dialogue, then run down the corridor and get another 3 minutes of dialogue. Then the whole emphasis on graphics, unnecessary physics and "realism".

There has been some examples of relatively "new" shooters where the devs just got the balance right for me. One example is "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas", it's open enough not to feel completely boxed in yet you are boxed in. Shooting like a maniac will deplete you ammo and you will be left scrambling around for weapons and ammo. Another series that got it relatively right is the Deus Ex games (Barring "Invisible War"), but then again it's a first person role playing shooter.

But that's not a contribution to the discussion. If you don't know if they've gone backwards or not, then you can't contribute anything worth reading so then rather post nothing at all. If you haven't played FPS in a long time and thus cannot give an opinion on the state of current FPS games, then nobody cares what you have to say.

Saying 'I don't know' is not viable discussion on a forum. It's spam. What do you think these forums would look like if every time someone was unable to deliver an opinion on a thread topic they posted that they were unable to do so?

Either contribute something of worth to a thread topic, or don't post in that thread at all. Now stop sulking, stop playing the little victim, listen to what we're saying and improve your posts.

It's funny how often the FPS games that are the best are those that break the FPS mould a bit by merging two genres. Take System Shock and the first two Bioshock games. They're also FPS-RPG hybrids and they're really stellar games.

I rate F.E.A.R. as the best of its franchise. F.E.A.R. 2.: Project Origin as its 2nd best and F.E.A.R. 3 or F.3.A.R. as its weakest.
F.E.A.R. 3 felt generic is comparison to the 1st and 2nd (IMO).

I did play COD 4 Modern Warfare on my Xbox 360 and it is an improvement over the old war single player fps and COD games and loved the single player campaign so the answer to the question is no.

Did you try FEAR3 in co-op mode?

Also, Bioshock infinite is the highest rated game of 2013 so far according to Metacritic (http://mygaming.co.za/news/news/56358-top-25-pc-games-of-2013-so-far.html). I had no issues buying it's season pass, and I don't normally buy season passes.
