HD5850 performance issues...??

Hey Guys

I just recently (on Friday) got my Sapphire HD5850 gfx card that i ordered, but im a bit confused...
With all of my research on the card and all the reviews i read beforehand, i came across some serious discrepancies between the performance numbers stated in all the reviews and what i actually got on my system. :(

Now first things first - my system specs:
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
MB: ASUS P5Q SE
GFX: Sapphire HD5850 1GB
RAM: 4GB DDR800 Mushkin ram
OS: Win7 x64 (RTM)
Screen: 22" @ 1680x1050
GFX Drivers: Catalyst 9.10 package as per the latest available download

Now as you can see this system is quite ok.
But my experience of the performance of games that are used in all the review benchmarks are quite different.

(Vsync was disabled everywhere)
I could be mistaken here and there with some of the figures, but it is a rough estimate as i did the testing over the weekend.

One performance drop that can be expected would be the difference of my C2Q cpu and the core i7 920 that the review machines use (and to a lesser degree the better ram that they use), but COME ON! The differences as stated in the figures above cannot be right??
I tried various times installing the newest drivers, DX etc. to make sure everything is up to date, and still...

Can anyone maybe give some insight into this?!
I know that its great getting such high fps already, but it should be higher.

Well maybe the i7 is responsible for the improvement, but ya dunno.

Where did you get your card and how much $$? :)

Hd4850 1GB had major issues when I had mine, especially with shading. Changed it to a 512mb version and it all disappeared. Weird I know yes, but your not alone on this one

Hmmm, most of the reviews that I read seemed to be running overclocked i7 cpus. That will make a huge difference with a card like that, since the 5-series ATi cards seem to be rather cpu bound (even with an OCed i7 975XE).

Post the link to the review, So we can compare your system to the reviewer's.

And might it be that they were running 6GB of DDR3 Ram ?
And yes, the Core i7 WILL make a difference. But your scores are not too far off in some of those benchmarks.

can you also tell us what Power supply you're running. Maybe your psu is not enough we never know but I doubt it

Well the reviewer's benchmarks were taken from various sites, wherever they reviewed the games that i could also test and at the same settings.
Yes, most reviews are done on Core i7 cpu's these days with 6GB DDR3 ram (also maybe running SSD), but still...

my PSU = Isonic 600W Megapower
Hdd i use is just a normal 500gb seagate barracuda 7200.11 (no SSD)

@Grimspoon i bought it from Prophecy Shop - linky: http://www.prophecy.co.za/sapphire-hd5850-game-edition-dx11-1080p-hdcp-compliant-p-58279.html

But I think i might have found the problem...
It seems that i need to reinstall my OS for some reason.
I ran 3DMark06 yesterday @ 1680x1050 4xAA and 16xAF and i got almost the same fps as i would get with my 8800GT on the same settings.
My win7 also shows that its only using dx10 if i run dxdiag (not dx11).

I'm pretty sure that once i reinstall and test again, that i will get better framerates... Will prolly do it this weekend...

I will advise if it helped.

That part has me baffled.

I'm running
Q9400 (your 9550's baby brother)
4GIG Transcend Axeram 1066
MSi P45
XFX GTX260 Black edition

My avg FPS outpaces yours easily in these 2 games, and I'm running 1920x1080 :/

I wouldn't worry TOOOOO much if I were you right now. Ati are known thesedays for improving performance on newer drivers, seeing as you got very new tech, give it a month or 2.

PS. That's why I NEVER trust reviews. I posted a similar thing in another thread here in the hardware section, regarding your 5850 card and review scores on it.

I think your PSU is not good enough. The Isonic is not a good brand PSu. Will suggest on getting a better brand.

The 5800 series is very cpu dependant. I tested my 5870 on a Q9300 and the difference is enormous between that machine and the i7 i have (std and overclocked to 4.2ghz)

check out your OS, thats where i think the fault lies a fault in thw windows files.

Guess im also gona be getting a 512 if i do get it, might be manufacturer try get a swap out?
