Have you guys noticed the steep increase in HDD prices. I bought a 500GB HDD two months ago for around R500 but retails now for R899. What a difference!

Yip, it is due to the floods in Thailand. All the HDD factories were flooded apparently.

There are a couple of factories back in action though, so shouldn't be to long before prices stabilize. I hope.

WD said the other day they are up and running at 100% and prices should drop in jan/feb however I think SA suppliers will milk it as long as possible

The original time frame was 6 months, recently I read it was up to 2 years. Now gwainw says next year?? Where'd you see that:D i need HDD's

A colleague bought a 2TB drive from our supplier a while back for R680, and when I phoned them on Friday they said it was R2200.

Insane!

So I will wait....

I bought a 2TB external for R999 over the weekend. Don't know if an external will help? Anyways try IC.

Best place to get HDD's at the moment is Game, Makro, IC etc. They dont seem to have increased with the shortage. But be careful of external's, one of the guys bought an external 2.5" as it was cheaper than buying an internal drive. When he broke open the enclosure the actaul connection was a usb port straight onto the pcb of the hdd. SO they not all Sata+power connections anymore.
Dont think 3.5" drives will be an issue though

esquire has a 128gb going for cheap but not really fast ... just waiting for the prices of these
things to come down, they still pretty pricey :(

SA suppliers will milk it the same way our shops milk petrol price increases. Prices always go up, and if they come down, its only a fraction of how much they went up by.

It'll probably be only a year or more before you see prices back at the reasonable levels they were before... :/

I think current price wont come down. We would need to wait for new Gen to come out and replace the current gen before HDD price will be reasonable.

From what i've noticed, I see that WD HDD's did not go up that much. Or the supplier I use, bought a large quantity of HDD's before the problem started

The local suppliers will keep their prices intact until they have sold all of the high priced hardware. Only once their purchase price drop will they consider lowering their prices. Hopefully this spike in HDD prices will be enough to win over the SSD argument, and allow SSD to reach critical mass.

Spoke to my guy at the one supplier and he reckons prices will only start decreasing in April next year :(

Sadly the best way to get a drive now is to keep an eye on specials from retailers.

Hifi corp (spit) had some great specials over the last week or so. Beating supplier prices by a considerable margin.

I bought a WD Caviar Blue for R399, now, from the same place it retails for R899. That was in the space of 4 - 5 months

I might just buy an external 2TB, and break it open to insert into my PC.... Then again, warranty...
