HDTV jargon

Hey

First off; sorry if this thread was discussed previously:confused:; but I'm in need of some help from a South African perspective.

I'm looking to buy an HDTV:D. Previously, the only spec I was told to concern myself with was 1080p functionality. However; now every single manufacturer is touting some variant of motion enhancement technology (Sony's Motion Flow and Samsung's Motion Plus).

I mean, a V series Bravia (with Bravia Engine 3 and 1080p functionality) will set me back about R13 000. However, getting an identical set with 100 Hz Motion Flow balloons the price to R21 000.

So, is it really worth investing the extra R8000 to get 100Hz functionality? I mean, when walking into Look&Listen and BT games; the games and Bluray movies running on their 720p HD displays look awesome (not sure if they using plasmas or LCDs:confused:).

Shot for the advice in advance.

Thanks DuncanBell. But do you know which brands this place sells. Ideally, I only want to consider Sony or Samsung.

What size u looking at Malphas?

32-49 get an LCD

Anything 50+ plazmas are the best because they are...

1. Cheaper in re to 50" +
2. Dont have screen burn anymore like the old plasmas
3. Support full hd

I think I'll have to go for 40 inches. It's a reasonable size and affordable. Back to the issue at hand though; what are your thoughts on 100 Hz motion flow technology Caboose?

Does it really blow your mind compared to normal 50 Hz referesh rates?

Nevermind all that Motion Flow crap. Just get a decent-specced Samsung or Sony. Even full 1080p is overrated - at 40", the difference between 720p and 1080p is negligible. The price difference, not so much. :P

Well I went from a "V" series 32 to a "X" series 46. Contrast ratio was higher etc, more hdmi ports for me to use. Goes together nicely with my PS3. Blu-Ray is the stuff :)

Plasma is good if you 50"+ etc :)

Thanks Azimuth, that's kinda what I was swaying toward. I mean paying almost double for Motion Flow technology seems absurd to me.

Playing PS3 on SD tv's was fine while I was in res; but then seeing and playing it in HD at my cousin's revolutionized the experience.
I was just wondering if the leap to 100Hz Motion Flow from normal HD would produce a similiar reaction.

Anyways, I heard the X series rocks Gradius. I'm really jealous; but being a new graduate means I'll have to wait for such luxuries.

There's just no going back to SDTV now, is there?

Not really. I don't imagine that any games are supporting this sort of technology anyway, so there's no point.

The 100/120Hz thing on TVs is mostly used internally only to create smoother motion by producing in-between frames of 50/60Hz signals. I would expect that most TVs out there will not sync on anything above 60Hz. Even if they do I don't think you'll find many devices that output 60+ Hz.

Now with regards to a PS3,it will only ouput at the standard frame rates of 50 or 60mhz which NTSC or PAL uses.

From what I've read, 3D games will require 100hz screens to give you a 50hz refresh rate, or 120hz screens to give you 60hz refresh rate, such as the game based on the Avatar movie.
Also, LED screens make a big difference in picture quality compared to LCD, but they're much more expensive :(

But as usual to have this tv would be a luxury really :/ Unless true '3D' games come into play, I see no reason to buy it. Unless ofcourse you always need the latest toy :)

I'm still playing on a 22" LCD, there's no need for me to upgrade at the moment, I'm waiting for this 3D tech to become more mainstream before I join in :)

I used to have a 32" but cause my living room is farely large I had to move the couches to see better lol. So i ended up getting something bigger @ the end. I wont be upgrading for a long time to come though..
