heat problem & thermal paste

so i am having issues with my pc, it starts up and runs for about 10-20s then shuts down.

i just installed a new mobo, GA-G31M-ES2C and with my old cpu not working, i decided to bring out my old cpu, e2140 until i have the $$ to buy a new cpu.

if i am lucky i can go into the bios, and it shows my cpu temp to be close to 70 (i'm not sure how acurate that reading is)

so my thinking is that it shutsdown due to excessive heat

having never have used thermal paste myself, where can you buy it, where do you apply it, and would this solve my problem?

all the fans seem to work 100%

any ideas, tips, suggestions, comments please

Arctic Silver 5 is one of the highest rated pastes.

Although I prefer OCZ Freeze:

It's easy to apply, just clean the area 1st and clean it well. I just use Whiteboard cleaner or 100% alchohol. then clean it off again with a paper towel to make sure it's residue free. Add a Dot or two of thermal paste in the middle and thats it. applying the cooler will spread the paste.

have you checked out your power supply ?
that was my problem also check how much solution is on your processor ,,,,,,

this could be due to other hardware components heating up as well your pc shuts down as a safety precaution

my psu is a 460W coolmaster (brand new, as my previous psu went and thats where my line of problems started)
i have disconnected everything, and now the only thing connected to the psu is the 1 hdd (80gig) and the mobo

AS5 seems pretty cool, i wonder if IC or PCInt would stock it, as i want to get my pc sorted asap and those 2 places are pretty close by work

[edit] currently there is no thermal paste anywhere, except small signs that there was previously some on the e2140

dude give Zaps a call or Matrix warehouse they will be sure to help you and ja its more than likely your thermal paste has run out or dried up on the cpu... I dropped my core by about 20 degrees after putting new Thermal paste on a while back worked like a charm :)

i will see if i can pop to zaps in my lunch...

...is applying thermal paste as easy as cleaning off the old residue (as slipperyduck said), applying a small blob (pea sized) on the top of the cpu and installing teh cpu fan as normal?

it would be redundant if i repeated saying yes to my own reply repeatidly in a redundant repeated loop again and again just one more time and then again

thx for then not being redundant :P

i am actually just being very cautious, and i want to try and fix my pc 2nite as i've been pc-less for a few weeks now, and most of things i am doing now, is a first for me...

...but thanks guys for all the input (so far :) )

hey if you got a problem gimme a call tonight.... ask ur mrs for mah number and then ja we can troubleshoot :p

schweet thx mr syco...

...but i hope *fingers crossed* that i don't need to replace any more parts...and the thermal paste sorts out the heat issue, so that i can reinstall windows (where the problem started...think)

and once i get my cpu temp below 50, (which is still high i know) i can get windows sorted, and then i'll be buying a new cpu and aftermarket cpu cooler

also try get ur hands on a Hyper TX2 its only like R200 it will also drop your core temp and its very very useful i bought mine through Sharkbait and it works wonders :D

Whoa 70C is totally abnormal even with normal old stock paste. I suspect you aren't mounting it correctly which is causing it to mess up.

1: Take a vacuum cleaner to your hsf.
2: Flash the bios, it may have gotten itself confused
3: Reseat properly, make sure all the bracket pins click down firmly and you can't budge them. This is most likely your problem. An e2140 should never, even under less than ideal cooling circumstances, reach 70c.

Oh yeh I also forgot you should update ur Bios because I know they can record incorrect temps sometimes... mine was doing that at Maplassie's lan once

Just be careful with a vacuum cleaner.... hmmm

I would rather get yourself a can of compressed air. I've never been one to take a vacuum cleaner to my PC.

lol i've done it a few times. just keep the vacuum nozzle from touching the fan surface.

When i dust my machine I use a High pressure blower.... gets rid of all that crap inside very quickly :)

cool will do this, come to think of it one of the pins was not clicking in...
