heat problem & thermal paste

IC sandton doesn't have thermal paste, so i guess i'll have to order online. and that means i wont be "fixing" pc tonight

[edit]damn, sybaritic doesn't have the tx2 until 16 feb...

emailed 'em to see about the thermal paste the 1st time you suggested them and no response yet...will call them later on

You don't need new thermal paste just use what is already on there but please at least try reseating or you'll burn the thing out.

Oh you may have too much paste on btw. Check that.

currently there is nothing but thermal paste residue...so i'm thinking its surely the paste, but i'm also pretty sure teh one pin is not clicked in

oh I see ok. I really hate the LGA775 pin arrangement, getting the stock fan on is a real pain. It's happened a few times to me or people I know that's why I suspect it to be the problem. You should try am2 if you want to see how a bracket should be made.

hahaha...thx jasong, next time round i'll consider amd ;)

atleast i've got my paste ordered, now lets hope i can go pick it up tomorrow

so i pretty much got the 4th pin to click inplace (it is still not a 100% fit ), but now my start up temp is down to the mid 50s

i guess 1mm does make a big difference (take that up as you want...lol)

when i get my thermal paste, and later on my new cooler, temps should be pretty normal.

but as murphy has it, my next problem is reinstalling windows. as when the primary hdd is the default hdd, i can't reinstall windows *sigh*, but when the 2nd one is installed and made the primary, then screen comes up that says do i want to install windows

lol...that happens when i type on myg and do work inbetween :)

but thx for the tip on the pins that need to be secure, atleast i can now kinda sort out the other issues, without having to worry about the pc restarting very 30s :D

just a quick update, after the thermal paste and all pins locked in, the cpu temp at idle is now 33-36

again folks, thx for all the help...

.ps: i've still a few small issues, that i'll try and sort out with some trail and error :)

thanks I'll take that pack of beers now Wiz :p

so i am having issues with my pc, it starts up and runs for about 10-20s then shuts down.

i just installed a new mobo, GA-G31M-ES2C and with my old cpu not working, i decided to bring out my old cpu, e2140 until i have the $$ to buy a new cpu.

if i am lucky i can go into the bios, and it shows my cpu temp to be close to 70 (i'm not sure how acurate that reading is)

so my thinking is that it shutsdown due to excessive heat

having never have used thermal paste myself, where can you buy it, where do you apply it, and would this solve my problem?

all the fans seem to work 100%

any ideas, tips, suggestions, comments please

My dad had a G31 chipset and the capacitors broke and make the pc run so hot you can't even imagine. don't go for cheap mobos.
