Heavy Rain dev blames second hand sales for €5-10 million in lost revenue

Ugh...... you know what? They can cry me a great big river of care......... cause I don't.

The only brand new games I've bought at full/release prices for my consoles have been Red Dead Redemption (Xbox360), Assassins Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox360) and God of War 1+2 HD. All the rest have either been bought secondhand (BT Games) or on special (the R150 special that Incredible Connection had last year)

I don't know of anyone that buys all their games new, Yes there are certain titles that can't wait for the 2nd hand bin but do they honestly expect people to shell out over R500 for every single title? This is especially true when it comes to console gaming...I have friends that earn over a Mill a year and still buy 2nd hand, because they agree its a total waste having to spend R1500 on 3 games.

Not to mention, with the releases for the next 3 months announced...It'll cost a small fortune to get all the new releases.
That said, although games are an excellent form of entertainment and yeah sure some of them offer hours and hours of gaming pleasure, most don't...you shell out R500 and then end up playing for 6 hours and the game is done.

What the hell?! You've got to laugh at how ridiculous this is. How in the hell can you lose money you never had?

Hey guys, I lost $10 million over the last year. I was creating a virus I wanted to sell to all the hackers out there, but nobody bought it and used their own methods of hacking. This means that I lost a lot of money.

I can't believe the gaming industry is still retarded enough to consider it a loss of money when they don't have that money. It's the same everywhere. There's always a 'projected loss' for every developer come end of the fiscal year, blamed on piracy and second hand games. Newsflash! If people have the money to buy your product, it doesn't mean they will.

Maybe consoles have to do something similar to Steam. You get your games cheap but they only work for you.

I will go for that. However to buy a brand new console game is crazy expensive. Especially if you can wait a couple of months for the price to drop or buy it secondhand and then it costs a third of the price.

Awwww... SHAME!!!

Go drink beer and have spagetti (get pissed then suck it up). First time I've ever heard of a company actually complaining out loud about second hand sales "stealing" from them. If they want people to buy the game new, don't charge R600 for it! Look at what the marketing team for RIO did: they put the retail price of Rio at R99 so that everyone would rather buy it than waste time and cap downloading it or something. If only all companies would do this.

And the companies that spend millions of dollars on copyright protection so someone can hack/crack it in 20minutes... Instead of spending so much money on the protection, make the games/movies cheaper so people don't bother with hacking/cracking. :/ eh? Makes sense. Who is with me? :)

How old are the XBox360 and PS3 now? And games still retail at R500-R600...

If they maybe sold the games at the R300-R350 price range and dropped the prices in a more timely manner (Lets say 3 months) to R250, people wouldn't even bother with secondhand.

Lol this is kinda like the anti piracy smear campaign they've been throwing at everyone for the last few years. They probably saw that, that was falling on deaf ears and found a new scapegoat to justIfy their insane launch prices =\ there are very titles that I buy fresh off the rack. Usually wait till they drop about R100 hen I consider buying the game.

They are just throwing figures around to make it seem worse than it is. Rather than wasting funds and time on these useless nuances, they could rather focus on putting out more content. I mean it's like saying that the 2nd hand car market is the cause of crash of the car making industry (pun intended if you wish) it just isn't realistically measurable nor is it feasible to sit all piss-willy over R50 - R100 million rand when they have already made millions.

Oh heavens no!
You lost money you never would have had in the first place!!!

SOMEBODY! ANYBODY! QUIIIIICKK!!! CALL THE WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE!!!

Oh cry me a big bloody f***ing river. I'm so tired of every second developer complaining how second hand sales are taking away money they're "entitled" to.

Just deal with it like every product maker has been since the rise of capitalism and make better products that aren't full of bugs requiring endless downloads that get sold for 5x what they're worth and stop alienating your customers with stupid "anti-piracy" crap that I have to crack even when buying a legitimate copy.

That's like car manufacturers complaining that you're selling your car that you bought brand new to someone who can't afford a new car.

Imagine if the civil&structural builders' union complained that people are buying/selling their houses on the (effectively 2nd hand market) instead of building new homes.

Oh the lulz. I think we just got trolled by the Heavy Rain devs.

Second hand gaming sales...it probably kept most gaming retailers alive during the recession, so it in fact, did not lose any more. Think about it...gaming retailers COULD have gone bust if it was not for second hand sales. Then these developers would have no where to punt their games to us.

I do see some logic in what these developers are saying, they are losing out on some sales (not billions, though). But at the same time, many new players are exposed to their games, which is a lot better than if they sold the same amount of games brand new to players and no one (read second hand buyers) else played it.

If people are exposed to your games, you can accumulate new fans, which in turn, will boost your sales numbers for your next game.

Stop complaining. Or I'll buy another one of your games second hand.

I sure as heck dont hear the motor industry crying about loss of sales due to someone buying "oh no , second hand".
And whos to say the person who sold the game to a second hand store , didnt use it to buy another game ?
Stats they wont have hey , no , they wont . Quantic Dream should put a sock in it.
I happen to have bought my Heavy Rain 1st hand , but still , If they didnt have a platinum release I would have bought it 2nd hand. Perhaps theres a lesson in there , make your games more affordable !
I bought Red Dead Revolver - platinum release from take 2 , for R250.
Why ? Well its cheaper than a second hand copy of the game and the publishers still got my money.
Chew on that for a while.

I lol'd!

Indeed Smithers!
Whenever I offload my second-hands to BT - I use the funds towards other new games. Clownshoes devs are entitled to nothing more henceforth.
And seeing as I did actually get my Heavy Rain firsthand and now this - thanks - I will NEVER buy anything NEW from that dev ever again.

*mumbles* bunch of whiny cows
