Help getting sound thro graphics card dvi/hdmi

Hi,

Don't suppose anyone can help me, I'm not struggling to get sound to my TV, from my PC. I'm running an ASUS GTX 285 TOP, on an ASUS Striker Extreme II board, with the Xfi sound card. I got the little SPDIF cable that plugs into the graphics card, to the sound card, but for the life of me, it just won't play the sound. The gfx card doesn't have an HDMI port, its got a dvi -> hdmi converter. The TV's HDMI 1 port clearly states that it is "DVI" compatible. The TV is a standard LG LCD TV.

Any thoughts? Is it just maybe config in windows / the sound properties?

Cheers mate, many thinks. I'm at my wit's end, don't feel like forking out cash to take it into a PC place, cause I rate if i can't get it going the average place wouldn't be able to either :P

then why does the GTX285 come with an HDMI converter and an SPDIF cable?

Apparently it's a bit of a hack it seems :

DVI to HDMI

DVI is mostly compatible with HDMI (see Compatibility with DVI). The main difference is that DVI typically carries no audio data in its TMDS channel, although increasingly, modern PC video hardware is providing audio (e.g. cards by NVIDIA[2] and ATI[3]), allowing the PC to send audiovisual data to a high definition television with an HDMI input. If a PC's DVI output does not provide audio, it can be patched in as part of the DVI to HDMI adapter.

I dunno, but it's possible that the DVI to HDMI adapter might only be taking the video data and ignoring the audio data. I dunno.

:( Thanks, seems i'll have to use the audio jack and keep, "re-enabling and disabling the HDMI audio" in the control panel to force PC sound

Kinda stuck using them; or a shitty pair of R100 IC speakers, my others blew and I am so broke, I can't even afford a mouth to piss in.

ATI 4xxx and onwards have inbuilt audio/video through HDMI which is a very nice and forward-looking feature. Nvidia 2xx HDMI is a hack. It has no onboard sound. Can you perhaps connect audio cables through the onboard PC sound to the TV?

that is what I have done, but because its running HDMI, I need to go into the nVidia control panel and enable and disable HDMI sound to get the normal audio jack sound to work :( its a pain in the arse. Have to do it everytime the PC goes into sleep or screensaver...

Is the audio connected correctly from the card to the motherboard i never connect that damn thing on Nvidia Gpus cause i can never get it to work.

well, I plug it into the gfx card and then the only other place to plug it into is on the Xfi sound card...and well...that does jack.

You need a DVI-I adapter

see the difference between DVI-I and DVI-D/a. The extra 4 pins will give you sound on HDMI. also you need the connector that goes from Graphics card to the onboard/pci/pci-e sound card.

I also battled with it until I read the manual carefully the realized that I need a DVI-I connector. Good luck finding one cause I've been to many many many many shops.

Many Thanks!!! Will check the connector I got, would be baffling if ASUS doesn't include that int he box with the graphics card! Many thanks all for the replies.
