psu adapter.jpg

I need something like this for a GPU I was recently given and every damn PC shop I go to looks at me like Im mad.
I did manage to get something similar but it was for PSU to MOBO connection and not PSU to GPU.

Any ideas on how I can go about getting the right adapter?
I need a 6 to 8 pin adapter. 6 pins from the PSU and 8 pins on the GPU.

Thanks!

Cables for Modular Power Supplies at most PC shops, so not sure where you were looking =D
I am busy getting myself some pretty custom braided ones!

Thanks guys, someone also suggested I get a new power supply. Im sure I'll end up in the same boat then anyway? Its a 550watt psu, the new card is an nvidia 680. Used an online power supply calculator and it says I will be fine with 150 watts to spare.

The new gpu takes a 6 and an 8 pin connector from the psu, at the moment I have two spare 6 pins. I thought that I could adapt one of the 6 pins to an 8 with an adapter but now Im thinking that the two 6 pins will need to be plugged into one 8 pin adapter(for correct watts etc.) is that right?

the card has no cables with it.

Yeah that one that I posted at Zaps require two 6 pins to be connected for one 8 pin.

Waht PSU do you have? i take it that it is not modular then?

I think its a Superchannel 550w. It is about 4 years old now. No idea how I would tell if its modular.

Is my noobness revealing itself yet? :D

Heheh indeed yes, but it is fine :)

The cable that you showed is for a Modular PSU. So if you do not have a modular PSU then you will have to get the MOlex converter.

Full Modular means that all of the cables can plug out of the PSU. Semi Modular means that all the cables except the ATX can be plugged out of the PSU.

Hope this helps and makes sense

Ah ok thanks! ya not modular as fas I can tell. All cables are tightly bound together with some sort of webbing and it all goes deep into the unit.

Ever since I saw the fire damage, I've lost all faith in anything related to molex adapters :p (molex to sata caught fire hehe)

I have seen plenty of molex connectors burn and melt, granted I have seen plenty of PC internal power connectors melt. They all melt for exactly the same reason. Poorly terminated connections to the terminals.

The moral of the story is "When in doubt, chuck it out"

I was in the same boat pretty recently. As far as I read it's not so much to do with your PSU being able to provide enough Wattage, but rather the load that every specific connection can carry, so 2x Molex to 8 pin might work, but could also shorten lifespan of either GPU, PSU or both, but maybe not... I opted for a [-]cheap[/-] budget second hand PSU off carbonite.co.za to save some money in the long run.

Partly right, a poorly designed PSU (aka a cheapie) will cause issues. You have to also look at the Amperage of the outputs while taking into consideration all other hardware components drawing from the same output/rail.
