[Help] Uncapped ADSL 1Mbps

Hi all how are you guys doing?

I have a question for all you internet users out there.

I currently have a 1Mbps Telkom line at my house, its capped at 6GB Blended and 20GB local cap. but this is not going to work for me. I NEED Uncapped!!! I saw that Telkom has a promotion running for about R600 for uncapped 1Mbps. But then there is Mweb, Afrihost, OpenWeb and all the other ISPs. I seriously don't know which one is the best. Can anyone recommend me a good ISP please??

What i do with my line is mostly work, online gaming(TF2, MW2, MW3 when i get it, and so forth) P2P(torrent, Cof, file-hosting) and then normal browsing. I do have a limit to what i can pay per month so please if you recommend keep that in mind.

Thank you all and have a great day!

I use open web gold uncapped.. Although I have a 512.. I can't give u a correct rating of this because we are still being run in their backup line because of the seacom cable thing.. But online play is good.. Download about 700Mb to 1,2 Gb in a day..:)

I'm on mweb uncapped 1mbps - data only @ R299/month and am very happy with it. I can do 6-8Gigs in a 24hour period (prior to Seacom outage, lol).

International gaming isn't great for me (FPS mainly like COD), but local is fine. I'm in Durban by the way.

I actually use WA (1gig anytime, 4gigs after hours) as my gaming account (gets 80ms less latency than mweb), and it allows me the best of both worlds.

So maybe just reduce your cap for Telkom, keep your line with them, and get uncapped data only? Game with your Telkom account, and download with your uncapped.

EDIT: I have always heard great things about openweb gold uncapped, but they were way too expensive for me (R449 as opposed to R299 for mweb). Not sure how their standard uncapped accounts are?? They're having a crazy once off deal for them @ R229 (1mbps) until the end of October . Check their website.

I should add I only game on an xbox.

okay, but if my line is 1mbps, will open web throttle me to 512?

Okay so if i may ask, do you pay then R299pm for the uncapped to Mweb, and then what, something like +/- R400pm for the line rental from telkom? (R111 for tel line and R289 for 1mbps adsl)

I'd say yes to the throttle @ 512k.

But, yeah, with WA, I have a 5Gig home connect account, for R329 (That includes my DSL line rental @ R250, its with WA. See here http://www.webafrica.co.za/home/adsl/connect/). Then I pay mweb R299 for my data. Then obviously the analog line rental above that which sucks, lol.

Basically, because I keep my line with WA, I get the line like R39 cheaper than Telkom (R250 vs R289), then for all my data, I pay R299(mweb)+R79(5gigs WA).

All in all: R628 + analogue line

All i can say is stay away from Axxess. I've canceled my contract with them and moving over to Mweb at the end of this month.

okay cool. so if my math is correct i will pay the following:
R139pm = telkom line
R289pm = adsl 1 mbps line
R229pm = Openweb uncapped
which will give me R657pm

Oh, and i have the telkom 3 month trail, so i get 6GB blended and 20GB local cap. sounds line a good deal?

Yeah why not. I like the thought of 2 ISP's.

If you find that Openweb Std is not working - as in shaping is too heavy etc - its just a month to month contract, so just cancel and move onto someone else. Simple.

Looks like you have everything there i am not sure of the amounts but looks about right

exactly my point! does mweb also have month to month? coz i know afrihost does.

Stay away from afrihost uncapped. Their capped accounts are fine but their uncapped fair use policy is horrific, Im on mweb now and Im happy with them.

I'm on Openweb's Standard uncapped @ R229, went for the special a few months ago. I'm fairly happy with it, most downloads run full speed (steam, http etc.) The p2p is definitely shaped but overnight downloads run pretty well. Ping is good locally but I find that my free FNB gig gives me a better international ping. I average around 90GB a month - so many steam specials :).

For line rental you might be interested in using iSAt (www.isat.co.za). Their 1mbps lines are R249 a month and I've found there service to be simple and good, been with them for over a year.

It's handy to have separate providers for line rental and data as it allows you to be flexible. Both accounts are month-to-month.

Telkom is not bad hey, things dramatically changed for the better >> peering, uncapped etc, downloads are more stable on SAIX.

I queried the promotional trial today and asked about Mweb. They replied: "Mweb is ours, we are Mweb"

Can anyone shed some light on this comment?

I'm on the Openweb R299 account and i works beautifully. The cheaper accounts were shaped way too much for my liking.

Somebody said stay away from Axxess? Care to explain why?
