Beat me to it :o

I run MalwareBytes on my machine, along with a licensed NOD4 (works on win7) :D

Then Firefox + noscript for added prevention

I would recommend AVG (freeware version) if you are strapped for cash and then NOD32 (Eset) if you have some money to spend for AV.

NOD is one of the best AV's I've ever used.
Most AV's have Spyware built in, although some spyware modules are just utter tripe in some AV programs.
Sunbelt's CounterSpy is one of the best Spyware apps I have used (it's not free). Sunbelt also released their own AV (Vipre - not free) and they have a personal firewall product too. Many people love and vouch for both these products.

You can do with some proper firewall software as well on your computer, but this can be technically challenging to some. Quite a few vendors sell their products as full suites (AV+Spyware+Firewall+Web Security+Identity Protection), and Eset is one of those (their Smart Security product) and Sunbelt, as mentioned above.
Sunbelt - http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-Office/ (listing all their products I mentioned)
Eset - http://www.eset.co.za/ (listing the AV and full suite)

AVG also has full suites (not free), I cannot vouch for them unfortunately - http://www.avg.com/221

There are freeware alternatives for all these (although they may not be as good as those you pay for):
AVG (AV) - http://www.avg.com/product-avg-anti-virus-free-edition and Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html (there is a Linux version too)
Spybot (Spyware) - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Comodo (Firewall, with builtin AV) - http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ and Sunbelt Personal Firewall (they have a freeware version with limited features) - http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/home-home-office/sunbelt-personal-firewall/

Any good AV should be scanning HTTP web traffic too these days, since this is how trojans / viruses / worms infect your computer and how phishing attacks are initiated.

Your browsers should also be protected as much as possible, via Ad Blocker programs and No Script. Firefox has some nice add-ons for these.

Here is a link with a lot of good suggestions, to make sure you stay and remain safe on the Internet. I have not used all the products on this list, although I have used / am using most of them - http://www.firewallguide.com/freeware.htm
NB!! PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. PLEASE BE CAREFUL ABOUT JUST INSTALLING ANYTHING. MAKE SURE APPLICATIONS ARE REPUTABLE! DO PROPER RESEARCH FIRST.

You only really need to pay attention to know what can happen to you if you are not protected when browsing / accessing the Internet. So, rather be safe, than sorry.

Nice list lilDeath, though I'd go with Avast antivirus or Avira over AVG. AVG has been pretty terrible in my experience.

I've heard from ppl AVG with combination of malwarebytes works pretty well.
But in personal experience AVG(free edition) has been pretty terrible :/

Yes, I agree, I missed Avast in my list. I will add it in.
AVG Free is a very basic AV version and have worked well on that basis. It 's protection is fairly decent, but the removal once you're infected is not that great, especially some nasties.

I don't mind paying for something which does a better job, which is generally the case.

Streaming wouldn't help either, you need to cache it before watching it anyways.

You know, for a person that hates asshole who use free stuff from internets. You sure know a lot about all these illegal stuff.

AVG sucks, pure and simple. It always missed certain viruses. Better off using Kaspersky and NOD :)

I think he means to stream content instead of downloading it. Not entirely foolproof, however, since nasties can still download in the background. The best way to avoid acquiring malware and viruses is:

1. Don't visit dodgy sites - this includes any warez sites, and pretty much any "free" porn sites (sorry).
2. Don't use warez. Seriously - cracked software is not only illegal, it's also almost always carrying piggybackers, especially keyloggers. Apart from everyone's favourite cracked copy of the latest Photoshop, this also includes disk mounting software and any other software designed to circumvent DRM and copy protection. This stuff isn't coded by nice people, and it's not distributed by nice people. Don't be a cheap asshole - buy software.
3. Disable autorun - lots of malware propagates via flash disks. If autorun is enabled, malware can execute itself the moment an infected flash disk is introduced to the system.
4. Don't download torrents. You don't know where they've been.
5. Use a firewall and AV application always. AVG is popular, reputable, and reasonably reliable.

It's a joke :P

Whenever someone gets a virus you tell them to stop downloading their porn and stream it instead.
