Help with new PC build

Ok so I need a new PC.

I want to build it from the ground up.

I am thinking something like this:

Phenom II 920
4GB DDR 2/3 1066 minimum
Graphics card is up for consideration. I have a 22" monitor, and want to run things on high with a bit of AA and all the cool lighting effects etc.
I want to overclock it, but I also want it to be super quiet.
My current Zalman CPU fan sounds like a fricken jet turbine.

Also need advice on a nice case.

Any input is most welcome
 
For graphics I'd recommend the Radeon HD 4870 1GB. I'm not a big expert on cases so I'll let one of the other forumites give their input on that.
 
Jokerman is looking to build a MOTHER of a Gaming rig for 30k.
He needs an interested party that will buy it when he is done, before he starts though.

Anyway, what gfx card you wanted to go for, NVidia or ATI? It may influence the rest of the rig.
 
30k?ouch. Im looking to spend no more than 10k.

Not really phased between ati or nvidia. whichever provides better performance at a better price.

I like the look of nvidia's GTX 260 216.
 
The GTX 260 216 would be a good choice, but I'm not sure how it compares price wise against the HD4870.

Tomshardware has an interesting article about overclocking your AMD CPU.

If you're willing to pay a little extra, go for the DDR3 to future proof yourself, unless you're looking to upgrade again within the next year and a bit time.

As for graphics card, I'd look into something with 1GB. A bit of AA I'd suggest Nvidia GTX 280 or ATI's 4870 X2 - if you're not willing to break that price range, as suggested above, the ATI 4870 1GB is a good bet (or the nvidia 260, but in this case I suggest the 1GB version of 4870 over the 260).
 
Yeah 4870 1Gig FTW. It's definately gonna be my Gcard when I do my upgrade this year...... unless something better hits.

Then you still need a Proper case and a power supply.

If you are using a 22" the 4870 1GB will give you 2-4 Frames more than a 4870 512mb on average. The biggest difference noticeable between the two cards is in Devil May Cry 4 DX10 where on average the 1GB has 9 frames more.

Just get the 512mb one. If you are looking at the 4870 1GB version I would suggest you take the 260 core 216 for that price.

I am not sure if I should wait now though, as Nvidia and ATi may be looking at releasing a completely new genereation later this year?

The next cards nvidia will be releasing are the GTS250 and 240. (Basically a 9800GT and 9800GTX) after that is the rumour of the 350. Which will trump all cards based on speculation. I really wouldn't wait if I were you.

My concern would be how long until ATI/ nVidia release the new DX11 cards. It would be silly then to buy a DX10 card now if DX11 cards are around the corner. Word has it that nVidia will be first to the table the DX11 hardware.

DX10 didn't prove to be as great as we all hoped, so maybe DX11 will finally move things along instead of being a minor update over DX9.

Well the first cards that were DX10 enabled cost an arm and a leg and you got 2 games that were DX10 after a long while and they lagged like crap. It's always better to wait a bit for the new tech to stabilize.
