I am currently running a msi z97a gaming 7 with a i5 4590 and a 1080, since 1150 is end of life, would it be better to scrap the i5 and get a i7 while i still can or would you suggest i switch to the current 1151?

Technically I think it should still hold out and keep up with performance until you're ready to do an larger scaled component upgrade (or complete).

I'm still running a first gen i5 and if i had a better GPU, I could still probably play any game on the market. You'll start to see a shift for more CPU cores come 2018/19 as quads become the new dual's and hex/octa's replace quads. Until then you'll be fine.
