High Pitched Noise

Solitude

Mr. Nice Guy
I've had my pc for a little less than four months now and it has been real quiet. Today suddenly it started making this constant high pitched noise. So I thought it must be a fan.

I opened up the case to listen where the sound is coming from and it sounded like it was definitely in the front. So I've got a fan in the front and also my hard drive. I switched off the pc and removed the fan's power and turned it on again and the sound was still there.

Can it be my hard drive? It's a Seagate 500Gb. I'm going to download some programs to test it now, but it looks like it's fine.

Ugh it is my hard drive. I ran the Seatools diagnostic program and my hard drive fails on the Short DST.

Its weird though, ive had mine for 6months now and I haven't had any issues, it sux though that yours is giving crap now.

Maybe not hey, try your monitor, lotsa ppl at work bitch about a high pitch noise and it comes from their monitor

Nope it's definitely the hard drive. I used Sea Tools to spin it down and the sound stopped when the hard drive stopped.

Also there are bad sectors. So now I'm busy making backups of everything. Going to reformat after that and see how things go. I've also emailed Take2 where I bought it from to see how long returns take and all that.

Stupid hard drive.

Yeah, I think the Hard drive is the worst hardware to replace, all the data transferring ect...Sux ass!!

I'm tired of this crap. It makes me so angry.

I will never buy a Seagate drive again. First when getting the drive the firmware had to be updated because the drives failed on everyone and now it's noisy and every time Windows starts up it tells me that the hard drive faces imminent doom.

And then Take2. They used to be good back in the days. These days it takes forever for them to reply to emails. I still haven't gotten a reply. If it was Prophecy or Kalahari.net then I would have gotten a reply very quickly. It was such a mission when I bought this computer. I bought my motherboard from Take2 at first. After a very long time they let me know that it would take another week since the suppliers were out of stock. So I said to change that and we changed it to a different motherboard. A week and a half later there were no change to my order status. So I phoned them and they said something along the lines of "Oops. That motherboard is also out of stock at the suppliers. We wanted to contact you." So I canceled it, got my money back and got a motherboard from Prophecy. My stupid Seagate HDD arrived from Take2 though.

Never again. No more Seagate and no more Take2. I've been a loyal customer to both but I've had enough!

:(

I know my CRT made High Pitched noises it sounded like beeps... bloody annoying ill tell you that.... but high pitched noises from ur Hard drive thats not normal is it???

SMART has been tripped. Do you think that is a good enough reason for Take2 to exchange the drive?

It passes the tests in SeaTools for DOS, but it fails the Short DST in Windows. It had some bad sectors that it fixed which I think caused the SMART being tripped.

When starting SeaTools for DOS it says that the drive has gone over 70 degrees Celsius. Which is impossible since the HDD is right in front of a system fan plus I've got Lavalys Everest running at all times and the HDD has never gone above 30 degrees.

So is the SMART being tripped a good enough reason for the drive to be exchanged? I don't want to keep working on it just to find it suddenly giving in on me.

Does it trip ur power supply at all???? coz then its def the hard drive... I kno i managed to get my hands on a seagate 320gb and then all of a sudden 3 days later I noticed my PC keeps tripping so I removed the hard drives and put the older ones back in first and sure enough it worked....

Nope it doesn't trip the power supply. I've got good news though. I got rid of the annoying sound. :)

I took the hard drive out and gently shook it a little bit and then I put it back in. Now it's nice and quiet again. Now to see if it continues working though. Windows tell me there's a problem with the hard drive every time I start it up.

hahahahahahahahahaha..... ur not rattling a baby to sleep here u kno rofl... i would suggest before anything happens that you take it back to where ever you bought it from so that they can have a listen because next you kno it fscks out and they wont replace because they will say u were tampering wit it...

The place where I purchased it from do not even care enough to reply to my emails. But I've been gentle. :)

well they have to considering if ur Hard drive is new it will be still under warranty and they have to replace it...... thats if you havent removed the warranty seal already???

Nope I haven't removed any warranty seals. :) I'll wait for them to reply or phone them tomorrow to hear what the steps are and whether they can replace the drive.
