Home media streaming options

So in my new place I won't have DSTV any more, and I am looking at different streaming services / options. I have a spare PC which I plan on using as a media centre that will be connected to my Wifi network.

Does anyone have any advice on what route to go ? I have been looking at Kodi and those android TV boxes. Pretty new to this field so just looking for some advice, thanks!

Not sure about online streaming services, but to stream media that is on my PC to my TV, I use Serviio. My PC is connected to my router, and so is my Blu Ray player, so I stream media through the BD Player to my TV/Sound System. It is finicky though, sometimes the BD player won't pick up the server, etc.
However, all other options I have tried have problems of some sort that are even more frustrating, like not playing all file types, not supporting subs, not supporting fast forward or rewinding.

Do you want to stream from a subscription based service from the net or from a network share of media files?

Both really, I'm just looking at my options, I don't mind a small subscription fee if needed.

Has anyone used those android TV boxes?

I still believe Raspberry Pi to be one of the best options. Load that with XBMC and you're set! But in general a Rpi is so useful, if you decide to change it's function you could.

Yip, If you have a pc there already then just use that...

Do you have a smart TV? Have you looked at Plex?

https://plex.tv/

Do you want to set up something like NetFlix? Or do you just want to stream from your PC?

I dont have a Smart TV, will be hooking up my lounge TV to the PC via HDMI and will play movies off there, so basically looking for a good platform to sort my libraries etc.

I really want Netflix, but I don't feel like doing the whole backdoor route you have to go through to make it work at the moment, would rather wait till we get official support later this year.

+1 Plex.

Set up the server - point it to your files. Run the Home theater app and off you go, with bonus streaming to any of your other devices.

Highly recommend Plex. I even have a Plex Pass Subscription to be able to download my content for offline watching on the tablet or phone. It also allows me to access Plex via the Xbox One app, or my LG TV has native support for Plex as LG partnered with Plex.

It's win all the way.

If you have a PC, install Kodi and watch anything from the Video Add-Ons section. Some of the best:
- Project Free TV
- Icefilms
- TestTube
