so, i'm going through a patch at work where everything just seems to be piling up and i'm growing increasingly disillusioned. just wondering how many of you guys feel the same? I work in an IT role, and fed up of having to know the business, better than the business :-( Plus, they get paid triple my salary, yet they are clueless....

Who's "they"? "whistling:

Well I worked in HR and Recruitment for a few years. Became disillusioned, then so bored and unhappy that I said fuckit and resigned. I'm now studying another degree (BSC Comp Sci), trying to do something with my woodworking hobby, starting a vendor management business. All the while I'm broke and unemployed and tutoring to make ends meet, but I've never been happier :) And I'm making 1/3 of what I used to now.

"they" as in the business users we support :-)

i wish i could follow this lead, but alas, i have a wife and 2 kids to support and am already neck deep in overdraft, so cannot afford to take a pay cut :(

it would prove cathartic to hear that i'm not the only one currently feeling like this, so if u have a crappy job, lets hear it. Misery love company :-)

I've been working full time now for 3 years at Amazon. Been in their Web Services department for almost a year now and I am still very much enjoying the company.

Luckily in Amazon, the opportunity for growth, both vertical and horizontal is always there.

Before that I worked as a drum tech for Paul Bothner Music for 4 years part time during school. Absolutely hated it.

It all comes down to your environment - the people around you, the work space you're in and the actual work you do.

currently employed at Autotrak SA, working as a key accounts specialist. not anywhere near my field I want to work in. pretty much topped out where I can go in the company. and I will not kiss that amount of ass to advance.

Ok Hiro, you asked for it. I'm a senior IT specialist in a global role for a company that is the 15th largest in the world in it's industry (which is not IT).

I'm sick and tired of dealing with politics and overinflated egos. I'm tired of dealing with people who are assholes. I'm tired of being told that there is no budget for salary increases, bonuses and equipment to ensure that the company stays afloat while millions are spent on bloody golf days, "sales indabas", bush conferences and other non-revenue generating shit. I'm tired of writing comprehensive technical documentation that outlines exactly how things should be implemented, supported and what the best practices are only for it to be completely ignored by people because they feel they can. I'm pissed off that I have to spend hours on conference calls to explain to the same idiots why their applications are slow for the aforementioned reason. I'm irritated because I have to fix junior and support staff's issues as they don't read and follow best practices. I'm tired of fixing everyone elses mistakes. I'm tired of lies and empty promises.

I just want to grab one of my senior managers and shout "SHOW ME THE FRIGGIN MONEY" in his ear so loud that his eardrums burst. I'm not happy, but I'm one foot halfway out the door.

I work in retail, so pretty much hate it. :p I love what we sell in the store and I love talking with people who come into the store, but I hate working the cash register and all the other crap admin that comes with the job. If the company's head office was in my home town I would probably try to get a job there instead as I like the company, but really dislike the general retail thing, i.e. the working hours (no proper weekends), difficult customers, etc. The main reason I haven't quit yet (been here for 5 years now) is because I like the company, but I don't how much longer that will be enough.

I do have a degree in Language Practice and I worked in that field for a while, but it is not really something I am passionate about. I have applied for other jobs in said field because the money would be way better than retail, but no luck so far and I'm also not sure how long I would stick with it if I do get a job.

I work for the same company as Wlad, and hold the same position as him.

It's retail. It sucks, atleast I have understanding and competent staff, so that makes it a little better.

Yeah, I gotta say the people I work with is a huge factor in why I've been working there for so long. They make it a lot better in my case, I always joke with them and tell them they must give me notice before they give the company notice if they plan to leave so I can start looking for another job as well. :p

Im a payroll Manager/Office Manager and being in management is not as glorified as some people think it is, im not gonna complain about the money but money doesnt bring happiness, i have a Management degree that can take me in the HR route or even in the field of law direction and other qualifications (IT Qualifications i used occasionally) but ultimately i want to go on my own start my own business, be my own boss do my own thing etc. cause i Can now see why ppl have strokes and heart attacks before the age of 50 and thats the age i would really like to retire at.

I work for a small company that resells enterprise software. We're branching out into other fields right now and it is an exciting time. I have no real job title and I'm involved in almost everything. I have no paperwork to fill out when I need to take an hour or a few days off. I consider my co-workers to be my friends. We have had some tough times but we figure it out and work our asses off in the process... But to our own benefit, instead of someone else's.

I love my job.

I'm a software developer for a company that specialises in payroll, fixed assets and other financial software.

At this stage I'm pretty tired and I can do with a proper break. I'm lucky though that I live very close to where I work and that I earn a relatively good salary. I was offered a job by a different company about a year back and declined even though it was for a better salary. So I don't hate my job but I don't love it either. It's a job though and I'm blessed to have it.

I'm slowly busy starting up my own company though with the hope that in a couple of years I can go on my own.

I like my work even though I work harder that I used to before.

My previous company I worked for, I swear the MD was a relative of some nazi concentration camp commander, used to throw a german fit whenever he felt like it. My boss was a lazy useless old man who either sat on facebook or coin collection sites the whole day, only stopping to moan over the phone how busy he is and telling me to go fix whatnot. Work four sites in 2 in Selby and 2 in Vereeniging.
My boss got sick was in hospital for 4 months, I ran all four sites (about 40 PCs per site) alone. Wasnt even thanked, meantime, managers get performance bonuses and incentives.
I even redid the networking in one site.

Earlier this a friend contacted me on Skype, asked me I still wanted another job, said yes, went for two interviews, thought nothing of it and was offered a position with better pay, better people and much more toys to play with. I worked for here for six months, and got a raise...wth?

Awesome to hear the guys where I used to work phone and complain about the, direct quote, "tool" they have employed there now.

I'm sitting on the other side of the fence (being the business user)...its not roses and sunshine this side either. Sorry.

People don't get paid a pile of money without some "negative" being attached. Exceptions do exist () but usually the money goes hand in hand with blood, sweat and tears - often in ways not immediately visible from the outside.

Fun fact...companies in my line of business tend to provide a crisis hot line for employees (the kind you call if you need someone to anonymously talk to)...and they get used quite a bit. Hell even my varsity ended up employing a psych counselor just for our class because too many people were cracking under the pressure. Wish I was kidding...

yeah, i know you are right. there are a number of super skilled business users who can certainly justify their salary. but at the same time, there are many more who really make you wonder how on earth they were employed for the role they find themselves in!

*sigh* i guess its kinda normal then, seeing as how the majority of us ear either borderline unhappy, or grossly unhappy. my greatest regret in life is the decision to do a BSc Com Science. Technology changes so rapidly, that its entirely pointless. what you learn on campus is practically worthless after a year. If i could do it all over again, i would study something like Engineering or Architecture or Pharmacy. Gonna make sure my kids don't make the same mistake :-P

I finished my 9.5 year stint at my very first development job in August. It started at a 5-man company which grew to a 28-person company. The department that I was jointly in charge of decided to break away and form a new company as the previous company didn't share our vision. So, lots of swearing and shouting aside, we officially started trading on 1 September 2014, which was both spring day and my 7th wedding annirversary.

Now, being a 50% shareholder, director and top exec in an 8-man company is incredibly stressful. Especially in the start-up phase where you have about no cashflow, but still need to pay salaries. It's quite envigorating all the same as each day presents a new challenge and you actually feel like you have a purpose in life.

So, in short, I love my job, but hate the stress. It was a worthwhile change after 9.5 years though...

@Solitude - Sounds like you work at that fancy-schmancy Sage building close to Menlyn...

Ditched a CS career for that same reason (no jokes...did a 180 ~4 months before varsity applications). Went for finance instead.

First week of varsity (I kid you not)...."OK class take out your freshly printed books (literally printed a few days ago)...we're going to update them for changes since printing.

nah don't cramp their style. Steer & advise, but don't cramp. My sister went for one of the careers that are big but don't command big respect ego/money wise...parents allowed it...went to the top uni in the country for that field and finished top of the class with honours. Seems like "top of your field" is economically viable regardless of field.
