How gamers in SA portray themselves.

That sounded like a pretty standard game of CS to me :P

Sad though... I think it's a maturity issue. Some people are socially maladapted and take their frustrations online.

I think its pretty standard for most online games, I recently started playing Dota, my god, I don't think I've played with a less helpful group of people in my life. Its got better now that I'm less noobish, but its pretty shocking, logic doesn't apply to them. You would think people would be happy to have new people try out a game, more people playing something can only be good, right? I would think companies like valve would be pretty concerned about this as I think its pretty off putting for new players.

gees, if that upsets you, do not play Dota 2, the ruskies will rage hard at you :P

there was a post from a russian player on the Dota 2 reddit site trying to explain the problem with russain players on Dota2 and basically it boils down to age, 95% of douches are 16 or younger and i think that goes for all nations.
Young players just don't get the whole politiness thing and theorictically shouldn't even be playing the game they are on.

the other 5% of douches are players that are older and think the sun shines out their ass, i saw most of them at Rage this year :D

long story short, learn to counter-banter, nothing kills a rage at you when you say "but i still luv you MWAH!" haha

Dota players are the worst.....

Personally, I love the trashtalking that goes with dota1 on the twilight server. Just makes it that much more entertaining most of the time:/

I just finished reading your post and I look at it from 2 aspects:

1. I'm quite astounded by the way those okes behave they sound like a bunch of inbred savages who need to go back to the veld.

2. I'm not surprised that you came across those people, and unfortunately everyone does eventually. It sucks that you had to go through that being a newbie and all that, but in another essence it's good you experienced it first hand because if it happened down the long stretch you may have felt worse off.

The first time I played an FPS online (CS 1.6) I was attacked quite badly and I was almost put off gaming for life, thank god for the mates I was playing with that told me it's all part of the game just go with it. So I learned the art of trolling and I pissed them off to such an extent that I was chuckling loudly (cue evil laugh). I think I agree with what Mephisto said but half and half, one you don't need a thick skin you just have plain assholes on the internet and they like to prey on the new kids. On the other hand I say just take it with a pinch of salt and don't take it personally, they don't know you and you don't know them. Chances of you coming across them again in game is slim but not altogether, and seriously play the way you want to. You bought the fucking game, it's your/your parents hard earned cash you can do whatever the hell you want.

I hope our advice here as given you a bit of insight and makes you feel better about the situation. ;)

See you in game!!

I obviously much worse at online FPS than you are! Then again, I don't play that much and mostly Tribes: Ascend.

I do apologise for the ***holes you came across. Unfortunately the arrogant and rude ones are the loudest. And the majority of us definitely aren't like this! Assign them to your "ignore and pity" bucket and carry on playing hard!

Being an afrikaans gamer I must say I feel ashamed how some afrikaners act. I myself have garnished a lot of criticism while playing from BF3, MW3 and the list goes on. I have noticed that the rudest and most retarded quotes come from Afrikaans guys online. But there is some good guys out there that plays games for fun and are not the kind to be rude or downright scummy.

Sorry to all that has gotten bitten by these afrikaners.

And people normally side with that "skilled" asshole. Btw the average age of gamers who play games like DotA/HoN is 16-25. The under the age of 16 gamers being the main problem is a myth and lie. The fact is that the majority of 16-25 gamers are just plain immature guys , and if the game is competitive of nature, testosterone makes it worse.

Lol...making a thread about how you were verbally abused by a bunch of Afrikaner guys you don't even know...I mean seriously is this your first year on the internet?

I once played on tf2 on 2fort with americans. Got onto the enemy`s balcony with a pyro and torched 3 snipers.
Could not believe my ears when someone on my team cheered for me.

Dude...you are the kind of person that puts a wedge between gamers and non-gamers..and by trying to tell a girl gamer that, you are gonna piss off alot of gamers since female gamers in SA are a rare breed.

Regardless of your stereo-typed attitude which is being discussed here.
Whisper whilst i will admit to having a dislike for some Americans for their perception of the world, what keeps happening to you is not appropriate behavior. The only time i rage at players is if they don't play as part of a team(if it's a team game) since the objectives are team orientated and they are essentially crippling the team. As said before, everything in the game or allowed by the game has been put there by developers for a reason, and if the other team cannot adapt their strategy, then they are in fact the "noobs".

Just make sure that in some way you are completing the tasks/objectives in the game in any way you choose, and after that just tell the sore losers to stop pissing in the wind, and learn how to counter you since that is essentially what gaming is about. The best players are the best, because they are easily adaptable and are fast learners

2 weeks back I reported a guy that was playing TF2 and harrassing a girl. Took some screenies and sent it to them. I don't know what valve do with these people. There really isn't anything you can do besides that.

Quite simple.

Im Afrikaans and the majority of my calls will be in Afrikaans should i know that who im talking to is Afrikaans. absolutely no point in barking orders if your team isn't going to understand.

I used to be IS admin on CS source.

ID ask only once for guys to stop behaving like retards and respect the girls. Then a quick 2 hour ban and if they come back after its a 24Hour - week ban.

I got Cs Go Sat morning and I dont want to sound arrogant but either the game is rather easy or the players are quite average.

Im a cod 4 player swapping Genres and still going at a 1KPD plus and the accusations and insults was Flying so I 100% what you are on about.

What I suggest if you are really keen play Pickups, You learn more in 1 pickup than you do from a month of Pub play. ( aim and recoil control aside )

hit me a Pm if you are interested in how to join pickups.

My Little sis plays so i know what you are going through :D

PS: 'NOOB CANNON " in early versions of CS:Source the semi autro sniper rifle was mega over powered and was used by inbreeds camping T spawn on Dust 2 and Especially the tunnel on PRodigy , Your death was almost instant and it was always the lesser skilled players using it.

Then it got the Term Noob Cannon and people got discouraged to use it :D

If its in the game use it :D

I don't chat when playing online fps games, because I know the internet is full of assholes. All you'll ever see me say are "GG" or "WP". I admit I don't play online fps much any more, I much prefer co-op games with buddies who's company I enjoy (Stellar Illusions GW2 I'm looking at you :D).

You're going to find these douche bags everywhere, I just leave any game who's community is rife with them, like for example LoL...

Ok... Read the essay :D
im going to admit that im hypocritical due to the fact that i took a dig out of whisper in the GW2 thread... but im opinionated and can go keyboard warrior from time to time, so sue me :p

on to the topic at hand!

Find a group of regular players and chill with them on Teamspeak as well as play frequently with them. Joining pub games solo opens you up to a lot of abuse if you arent average to moderately skilled in the game. We have players in our clan that have recently gotten into dota 2 *cough* R4C3 *cough* and by playing with us not only are they getting better, but they are abused a hell of a lot less when you have 3-4 guys with [SS] clan tags.

I also had spans of issues with insults when i started out, so you will learn to tune them assclowns out. Ive found recently that CS:GO and Dota (most moba titles actually) communities are particularly venomous. And 90% of the venom is from children with e-peens the size of a large city. I've also had my fair share of run ins with afrikaans gamers that have gone so south i stopped playing the game online for months, the original dota on warcraft 3 i stopped altogether because of the unending flaming i would get.

As for the language barrier, i speak only two languages, Engrish and BAD Engrish, so i have difficulty with Afrikaans players (and im in a very Afr clan at that). After a while you can pick up the gist of what the guys are saying but again it comes down to learning how to phase them out (selective hearing FTW). Another thing which is quite useful in just about all online games these days, if the whole "sticks and stones" thing doesnt work for you, is a mute function. I have probably half of russia muted by now \m/^_^\m/

I'm also very guilty of raging in games at times but i curse/threaten/abuse the air around me and very seldom go apeshit on chat or text chat unless its with buddies on TS because its just easier to write off the issue as life experience and move on than cause a flame war with the true n00b with the damaged e-peen.

As its been said above, there are a lot of douchebags out there and i know a fair few by name, but something i enjoy doing is using their rage and insults as motivation to utterly destroy them be it as a K/D ratio or actual kills, and if you cant do this, either leave the game and enter a new one or just keep on trollin 'cause they already hate your guts.

Re-read this post now and it seems a bit all over the place for me... I BLAME MONDAYS!! :D

You should revise the topic name of this thread. You have incorrectly used the word "portray" and the thread name is therefore nonsensical. Once you've revised that I can provide an opinion, until then: I'm not certain what it is you want to discuss and I can't help you.

The title should read. How I see South African gamers. The current title suggests that South Africans are bad people?

Because we take out all our rage on NPCs whose feelings can't get hurt? :p

Works for me :D

Frankly, going by the thread title though - this is hardly unique to SA players, it's a general issue that crops up regardless of nationality, during my days in Aion I was quite frequently exposed the the general Greek vs Everybody Else ragefests.

One bad experience doesn't describe the entire community, you're going to run into douchenozzles no matter where you go. You either move on or you grow a very thick skin.

This is why I mostly avoid playing games on public servers. Instead, I have a group of people I actually know personally, and friends of theirs who can be vouched for, and play with them instead.

As a woman, there is also the added problem of sexual harassment, which I know keeps a lot of us very quiet in public games. Even when I'm playing in a private party on Xbox LIVE, if an unknown friend of a friend joins, I usually stop talking. Previous experiences have taught me that some guys are just so inappropriate when they realise there's a woman in the game, and a lot of other guys think it's a joke or even flattering. It's really not.
