I'm using plex media server with my Xbox One and for free I might add. If I understand correctly the premium paid use of Plex only enables you to stream online content. My entire library can be viewed and played on my console and I'm not paying a cent for it.

Are you using the plex app on the xbox one store or are you using xbox built in app? (to play your content) The cost they talk about is not the plex server (the one on your pc) but the plex player which you can install on any console by going to the appstore on the console. Plex player will however be free eventually , so the cost is only if you want it now while its still in a beta phase.

Plex player is pretty nifty though (same as plex on phone /tablet) , i haven't checked out the xbox one built in player, but i think currently the main users would be ps4 because dlna is not yet available on it last i heard (and plex player basically adds it)

I use the Xbox's built-in app. It basically has most of, if not all, of the functionality.
My files are nicely categorized with poster-type thumbnails and all the correct names are added to series. It's very usefull to have my console remember what I've recently watched so I'm never lost. Also got myself the media remote so basically have the perfect replacement for the DSTV which I cancelled a while back.
