They would be using industrial diamonds not normal diamonds. Given that the storeage is on an atomic level you'd only need a shard or an industrial size where you are looking at something like R5 a carat. If they needed a stone then you are looking at maybe R150 per carat for an industrial diamond.

Cosmetic diamonds are cut and polished, all that finishing adds to the value, rough diamonds aren't worth much alone.
