If I save the wallpaper and open or set as desktop background it stretches it horizontally with black spaces top and bottom.

Nice idea; feel free to contact me once you have a list together and a plan for the image, and I can try help find you high-res art files for characters from the press sites I have access to.
 
What about Captain Price? He was a legend, survived WWII, WWIII and the Gulag

If I could offer a suggestion.
Image -> Adjustments -> match color

it will make them seem a bit more together.
