I have 1Gbps fibre! How should we celebrate?

One of the biggest frustrations when I was trying to stream during the Borderlands 2 MyGame was the physical limitations on ADSL in South Africa (not to mention the instability of my line at home).

That is hopefully at an end! Frogfoot has rolled out fibre in my complex, and because I can I ordered a 1Gbps uncapped connection from Vox to use for the first month. It is utterly ludicrous and I'll need to live off beans and water for a few weeks, but I had to know what it feels like. (From next month I'll downgrade to a more sane 100Mbps).

Where my 1Mbps maximum upload speed on ADSL was woefully inadequate for HD streaming, I can probably stream 4K now.

So that's one thing I'd love to try again! Streaming some gameplay and talking rubbish on the MyGaming Discord. What say you?

Any other suggestions? :p

If my calculations are correct, you can download Doom (~50GB) in about 7 minutes. I'd test that :3

Also, I'm struggling to like you right now. Gosh I'd love me some fibre.

I don't have an SSD, so it seems like 20 minutes is my minimum. Maximum download speed is also about 400Mbps (from the JHB server, anyway). The network graph actually goes dead and only disk activity remains. Steam must be reassembling and extracting the files?

I've never seen that happen before! I wonder what the inflection point for that is... At what point does your download speed become irrelevant because Steam has to process the files (which it usually does while the download is happening)?

Yay, more streaming and talking trash on discord.

You could probably stream to twitch and youtube gaming at the same time.

I haven't used a RAM disk since the days of DOS 6.2. Sounds like something fun to try :-)

Only have 16GB RAM, so it'll have to be a relatively small game by today's standards.
 
It would be interesting to know what kind of private online services one could have for yourself ? Hosting a website, if it's not against terms of service. For example remote (file) access to your local machine. On the other hand, With speed like this there is no need for any local file storage, instantly sync all local files with cloud based backup. One's storage requirements go way down. In stead of having your Steam games downloaded on your loca machine one can just quickly download as needed. Way back in 2005 when I lived in London a friend of mine had 50Mbs fibre link at home (shithole Leyton), when 8mbs was still the norm. I was amazed to see the 5mb downloaded per second. Operating a VPN, specifically Steam streaming ? When travelling, take a laptop, then VPN to your PC, use laptop as a thin client. Would that work ?

I'm stuck with 1Mbs upload, in reality it's 800kbs, I've attempted Twitch streaming using OBS (OpenBroadcaster) but had to tone down the video bitrate to 400 kbs, the resulting image is just blocks. Useless. My Fallout 4 paythrough video Youtube upload took almost 48 hours for 2,2 Gb to complete. Wonder above wonder I did't suffer a connection error.

Really super jealous right now. Would love to have a stab at a Gbps line. And yes, the more streaming the better!!! I would highly recommend we select like a few co-op or multiplayer games, and play together something like twice a week, with streaming to Twitch and YouTube Gaming all at the same time. Also look at https://restream.io/, service that lets you stream to different services at the same time. there are some lag between the platforms that I've seen from other streamers, but your connection is so damn quick that it would be very minimal.

Pity most servers / services can't actually deliver at 1Gbs :wtf:

For example Steam downloads cap out at around 200mbps or so for me, and that's with my SSD

I've heard and read quite a lot of articles saying Australian internet is crap. What has your experience been like?

Aussie internet has made me appreciate Telkom. That's how bad it is. Here, everyone connects via the NBN (National Broadband Network). You then have the choice of ISP to provide you the bandwidth. The problem is that your speed cannot be confirmed, so you can either get speeds over 10 Mbps or under 1 Mbps. It depends on all the elements of the universe. Which sucks! And don't even get me started on ping. In SA people freak the f out if they ping at 200ms. Here I would be happy to get pings less than 400. There are more local servers though, which helps. But there's no way you'll play any game competitively in other than Oceania servers. The cost is less though than SA, but not by much. My current uncapped plan retails for about $75 per month. There's no other cost so that's nice. Also, fibre rollout is slow and very limited. That's my experience with internet here.
