I7 system freezing issues

ok so i have this small problem with my one pc at the moment and that is it keeps freezing or throwng up blue screens when my screensaver comes on or when i play videos sometimes (the pc never used to do this before. the irony is when i play graphics intensive games it doesnt freeze or when i render complex models and scenes in 3ds and maya it runs perfectly, the trouble only starts when my screensaver comes on which is a 3d screensaver that makes use of the graphics card and its pixel shaders and the sound card but its very far from using the processing power of say crysis or far cry 2, i have already swapped the graphics card with the one in my phenom 2 and it does the same so its not the graphics card, i have also swapped the ram around, removed some dimms etc and it still freezez, if i run a diagnostic like sandra the pc dont freeze, the only possible suspects i can think of is the mobo (temp is usually around 30 -32), the cpu (temp barely goes above 50) or windows (xp pro 64) having some driver issues. what can the problem be

pc specs below :(

I7 975XE
Gigabyte GA-EX58 mboard
6 gigs ram
GeForce GTX285 1GB
Coolermaster 1250W PSU
XP Pro 64

its broken i agree, send it to me plz

-does the other pc also crash with same screen saver ?
-what does the BSOD say ?
-any clues in your event viewer ?
-tried cleaner and reinstall drivers ?

When I first got my current PC, I had the same problem with the screensaver and video ..... after much despair, I was told to get my codecs in order and try a different Nvidia driver and hey presto, the problem was gone.

nope other pc works fine with the screensaver

the bsod says alot of words all i can remember is windows has shut down for protection something like that. it defintely cant be a virus since mcaffee is always to date

already updated the driver for the gfx card and still does the same schitt, pooped in the ati card from the phenom 2 system (the one i am typing from at the moment) and it still freezez. when i play crysis or nfs undercover or any graphics intensive game no freezing or bsods , the moment the ssaver comes on i get bsod or when i try to play certain videos (tv series eps usually dont freeze but certain movies doesnt matter if its avi or wmv then it freezez or gives me a nice bsod.

go to your event viewer and see in system and application the red marked issues. for interest sake what codecs do you use ?

the only errors in event viewer under appplications is a bunch of crypt 64 errors under system there is no errors

Ok have you checked if ur codecs support such an extensive feature regarding the i7 etc... and what about Firmware updates??? What is the error message you get when ur BSOD comes up???

i suspect it might be xp not supporting all the features of the i7 or some other software prob, i have swapped the ram modules around last night and removed some of things that reside in mem that i dont use often like ms messenger and skype etc. hopefully 2nite i will have time to sort out the codecs.

bsod or it freezez ! usually bsod claims windows has shut down for its own protection (some schitt like that) and some error code on it. its not a bsod with the text in the middle all the text start in the upper left corner of the screen

and did you check the event log or uninstall the codecs before going reinstall windows ?

been the two burning questions on my heart :D

Another way of identifying codec issues is using a media player like VLC, if the video plays back fine in VLC (no freeze or blue screen), then it is likely your codecs that are borked.

reinstalling windows didnt help but the problem has Finally been found ! One of the memory modules was on its way to heaven, I am currently running the system with the remaining 4 gigs atm and no freezing yet even when multitasking, mp3's, firefox, maya, 1080p videos all @ once etc :).
