The Ice Climbers were removed from the upcoming Super Smash Bros. after the development team was unable to get the duo to run properly on 3DS, lead developer Masahiro Sakurai wrote in a column for Famitsu (spotted by Nintendoeverything).
According to Sakurai, the team had the Ice Climbers running on the Wii U version of the game, but were unable to find the same success on the 3DS, due to the handheld's hardware limitations. Sakurai notes that the series' lack of popularity made the decision to cut them from the game easier.
Sakurai goes on to write that Smash Bros. is being released later on Wii U than 3DS to allow more time for debugging. Had the two versions shared a release date, they may not have been released until 2015, he added.
A recent rumor suggests that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U may be released in November. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is set to launch on October 3. In the meantime
