IGN Kinect Hardware Review

The Legendary Troll Hunter
After over a year of anticipation and hype, Microsoft's ambitious new motion control solution, Kinect, has finally arrived, and with it, a whole new era of gaming. Through its use of advanced motion tracking cameras and sensors, Kinect replaces a nearly 40 year old staple of gaming, the controller, with a player's whole body. Naturally, such a radical concept warrants some skepticism; can Kinect successfully change the way players interact with the Xbox 360?

Sound promising, even if just for some casual fun with the wife. I think I will get this.
Though I may wait for some of the other games....

R2000 for some casual fun does not compute...

The tech and sci-fi feel of it appeals to me. Using voice commands to pause/stop/forward video, video calling. All intresting features and before long a dev is going to give us something like Heavy Rain with Kinect which could be awesome.

MS may be onto something quite cool here, but it needs another major iteration at least which I doubt we'll see this generation.

For all the talk of revolutionizing the Xbox 360 experience and making gaming more natural/ accessible, it's bordering on absurd how broken Kinect is when it comes to something as simple as working in your home. I find the technology itself fascinating, but the fact that I know a lot of people who simply won't get Kinect to work in their rooms beyond troubling. Given that Microsoft conducted a beta program with actual consumers, this issue is doubly surprising, but it could just be that Kinect just works that way (or doesn't, given your room) and there's no way short of redesigning the sensor to fix it.

If Kinect does work for you, congratulations: you have what amounts -- for now -- to a novelty peripheral that is in no way geared towards the day-one buyer or "core" gamer. Microsoft conceived a potential game-changer with Project Natal, it just seems like Kinect was born prematurely.
