"Image of the day" does not spell "Pretty and/or funny". Oh wait, yeah, I'm sorry, it also doesn't spell "Thought Provoking".

So then, what exactly constitutes an Image of the Day?

I would say a picture that you want to share for a good reason, whether it be funny, thoughtful or interesting, or whatever. I can't see any obvious reasons for the pics you posted, and you haven't given a reason why you wanted to share them, so currently looks like random pictures to me.

So, why did you post those pictures?

...I can't see any obvious reasons for the pics you posted...

If you have to ask this question, then you are poorer for doing so. I will help:

Picture #1:
First motivation: It's a good photograph. Brilliant angle, colours are monochromically vivid and, had it not been for the guy on the far left resting his chin on his palm, the composition would've been perfect.

You might find yourself wondering, are these inmates of a prison or a mental health institution? No bars on the windows might be indicative of the latter, but is that a plain-clothes guard in the window? Do the windows lead to the street, or just an enclosed courtyard?

Is the room quiet or filled with conversation? Everybody seems to be looking at each other, but it's unclear if anyone is talking.

The differently coloured uniforms could point to periods of incarceration - lighter uniforms mean longer stays?

Are those cigarette butts in the two bowls closest to us, or some strangely foreign pasta?

If this is a government institution, how much do they save annually on shampoo?

Maybe it's not an institution at all, just a place for co-workers to mingle?

Or maybe, just maybe, this is a LAN and they are waiting for their PCs to arrive?

Is this picture fake or real?

Picture #2:
Something you don't see everyday and most wouldn't want to admit exists. It's often (not always) those with family members in such institutions who decide to shun them. This picture might help them to snap out of their denial.

It is a snapshot of human imperfection and serves as a reminder and inducement that the human race should strive to eliminate such deficiencies. Read: eliminate the deficiency, not the person.

Again, it is a good photograph and appeared in Life magazine.

I will leave the rest of the pondering up to you.

Basically, I'm a bit tired of all the brain function draining bubblegum pics in this thread and I will continue to post pictures that evoke some kind of emotion. However, my next picture might evoke lust, which is not a legitimate emotion, even though many might experience it as such.

Different: yes. Poorer: no.

My preference for beautiful pics are views on nature, like a misty forest or a mountain top. Art pictures of people aren't that interesting for me.

Thats all perfectly legitimate. But this is the internet, it's supposed to be all brain function draining bubblegum. Otherwise it wouldn't be the internet we all know and love.

Sigh.

Alright, let's see if I can follow your lead:

Notice the topaz. Which one will you choose?

NOTE: There are more than two options.

Whilst there are no set rules for this thread, I think the overwhelming thought here is that it is for some comic relief in general.
