I understand the top part of the pic, but what does putting your finger in-between the blocks do?

The diagram illustrates two identically coloured prisms, but the light shading in the middle is aimed at fooling you into thinking that the bottom prism is lighter than the upper one (due to the dark/light shade split.) Now by placing your finger across (horisontally over) the dark/light shading joint, you remove it from the equation and seeing that both panels are in fact the same shade of grey becomes apparent.

What's so interesting, right from his first experiment on stage is that we don't really see colour - but rather our retinas are tuned into contrast.
