They do have desks. Check the people in the front row. The laptops are all sitting on desks. It is the smaller type that is connected to the arm of the chair.

It's a lecture hall after all, not a class room (well not the type that we know at least).
That is a LOT of Macs though, I bet if they killed the lights no one would even notice
Macs are extremely popular in universities both here and the US. Its extended battery life, OS stability and long lifetimes make them idea for students.
