In-ear headphones

Hello guys and gals.

I stay in Sunnyside, Pretoria and sometimes the external noise (music, etc.) is so loud that I cannot concentrate properly on playing my PC games.

Noise-cancelling headphones are quite expensive and I have been thinking about getting a cheap in-ear headphone (I do not need a microphone). I presume it will mute external noises a little better than an ordinary headphone.

Am I right or wrong?

Another thing, does an in-ear headphone connect the same way to a sound card like a headphone?

I am not so conversant with these things so your help would be appreciated.

In-ear earphones / sound-isolating earphones works well to keep out unwanted environment noises. Only thing you may need is an auxiliary cable extension; the cords that come with these earphones are typically short; as they're designed for mobility.

What is your budget? How much are you willing to spend?

I'm all for the idea of in-ear headphones, but I do get these weird pains in my earhole (that's a thing, right?).

Thanks for the feedback so far. Let's say my budget is about R800.

The following facts has so far come to my attention:
(1) An in-ear headphone will need an auxiliary cable extension to connect to my sound card.
(2) Outside noises will be attenuated, but not complete blocked.
(3) An in-ear headphone will block outside noices better than an ordinary headphone.

You guys know where I can find such an auxliary cable?

Are you looking for headphones or earphones? The two are different...

For gaming, closed-back headphones would definitely be a better choice.

If you're more interested in earphones, then you're looking for the 3.5mm to 6.5mm jack adapter - such as this one

You can pick those up at ZakSpeed, Dion Wired, Hi-Fi Corp etc.

Also, in-ear monitors are extremely expensive as they're used by musicians.

See now - I didn't make mention of headphones (like the closed-back Sennheiser HD 202s I have, since he mentioned in-ear; which I assumed to be a preferential choice.

Headphones are what I'd assume to be a better choice for gaming than earphones (speaking from experience).

I had the 202s as well back when I was in school but they were stolen out of my bag :(

Closed-back headphones would definitely be recommended over earphones for gaming. Are you going to be listening to music as well or is it strictly gaming?

Maybe take a look at this thread and see if it helps - Headphone Suggestions & Recommendations :)

Heish! You guys got me now so confused I can make somersaults from the veranda of my 7th floor flat!

Let me explain:

Next to the block of flats I am staying, there is an open field. Some bright guy has bullshitted the munisipality and erected a massive tent on this open ground. Now on Sundays they speak on loudspeakers and play music so loud that I cannot play my games. This carries on for 6 hours or longer. We genuinely have a serious problem here.

I can wear earplugs but then I cannot play my games. That is why I am looking for something that will help me MUTE this terrible noise.

I trust you guys can point me to the right direction

Closed-back headphones would be what you're looking for then.

OK thanks. But as I said I am not very conversant with this kind of hardware.

Could you please direct me to an online shop that will sell this.

Sorry, but I am not sure how a closed-back headphone looks, or differs from the others.

Not a problem :)

Closed-back design headphones don't look too different compared to open-back headphones.

Seeing as your budget is ~R800, I'd take a look at these:

Shure SRH240 - R660.95
Sennheiser HD419 - R699
Sennheiser HD429 - R979

Thanks a lot. You are the expert so please tell me which one would you choose if you were in my dirty socks :)

The difference between the HD429 and HD419 aren't too huge. The HD429 is more comfortable, as you'll find the padding along the ears and headrest to keep its firmness and not get sticky or covered in moisture with prolonged use.

The HD429 is also not as bright at the HD419s. The low-end is a lot tighter and less muddy, and you'll find that when gaming, distinguishing sounds during intense firefights/explosions will be easier because of this.

I'd go with the HD429s :)
