Six different video games have met the criteria needed to be the first inductees to the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Located at the Strong National Museum of Play which is based in Rochester, New York the Hall of Fame requires games to meet four specific requirements for consideration. They have to be iconic, have longevity, have reached across international boundaries and also have exerted influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment or on popular culture and society.

The six games to be the first of many include:

  • Pong – 1972
  • Pac-Man – 1980
  • Russian Import “Tetris” – 1984
  • Super Mario Bros – 1985
  • Doom – 1993
  • World of Warcraft – 2004

The World Video Game Hall of fame says it recognizes games across all platforms such as arcade, computer, console, handheld and mobile electronic games and all have the possibility of being included. The Strong Museum, which is also home to the National Toy Hall of Fame has been preserving games for the past several years with it’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games.

Of the 15 finalists that were announced in late April, nine did not have what it took to be inducted at this time. Those titles included: The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Angry Birds, FIFA, Pokemon, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog and space Invaders.

Nominations for 2016 will be considered up until March 31, 2016 and then will be decided upon professionals familiar with the history of video games. To check out the World Video Game Hall of Fame and more head on over to the official website here.

I grew up on Space Invaders and Asteroids on Atari. And to induct FIFA now would be reputation damage in the extreme.

Angry birds is considered to be gaming hall of fame? Was the voting done by post-2000AD-born babies? O_o

Diablo?
Hate to say it, but it did become a national sport for a country.. DOTA?

What about starcraft? or maybe even quake. Wolfenstein could also possibly apply. Battlefield might work as well

I'm sure a lot of our favourite titles will be included in the near future. Going to be an awesomely nostalgic place to visit one day.

DOTA is smaller than LOL player wise, then you can argue did it inspire other games.

What about Cult classic Mortal Kombat? And the Original Killer Instinct Remember the Old Daytona racing game man we rocked those at the arcades.

Remember Panzer Dragoon? i think idiots compiled the list :p

WARNING - The following is an opinion other than the general masses....rage may be induced by reading this:

So, I see everyone is rather angry, asking why not this game, or that game. I've had a thought about this, and I believe that the games picked for the first round of Hall Of Fame inductees are perfectly thought out.

You see, here is my train of thought:

We are thinking of this from a gamers perspective, and gaming quality is an all too subjective thing. People like different types of games, and feels very strongly about their favourite or best or most influential game to be added to something like a Hall Of Fame list. But, thinking about it more carefully, a game that should get this honor should be a game that transcends over cultural and social boundaries. It should be games that has done the most for gaming. Not just from a pure gaming perspective, but a cultural perspective as well. The games in this current list is undeniably legends in their own regards, and these games has probably been more influential in areas other than gaming. These factors are taken into consideration I believe when choosing games for the Hall Of Fame.
