Intel or AMD - CPU power

Hey guys

Having a 'heated conversation' with my boss over which company currently has the most powerful desktop PC CPU.

Can any of you enlighten me and therefore my boss as to which Company rules the market at the moment?

Most powerfull would probably be the new i7 form Intel. Trying to find some benchies now.

Yip, i7 is tops at the moment...... expensive tho. The AMD Phenom II X4 955 does well for what you pay for it.

Intel easily has the most powerful commercially available CPU, but AMD offers good performance on a lower budget.

I am a AMD Fanboy and even i agree the Intel Core i7 currently the best cpu on the market. Still wouldn't buy it though way too expensive for just a CPU...

Neah not miles behined... The Amd phenom 955 BE can and will run any game in ultra high settings obviously depending on the rest of your setup.

The i7's are damn nice for Benchmarking but in the real world of gaming there is no way you'll ever need all that cpu power..they can't justify that price..im sorry

I hate to break it to you but 'running all games on ultra high settings' is not the sine qua non of cpu power.

I hate to brake it to you but if you read exactly what I said then you would understand what im trying to say.

This is after all a gaming forum.

I get what you're trying to say and I agree that AMD has a great value offering - but raw power-wise it has nothing to compete with the 975, and the 6-core i9 will leave them eating dust. This isn't a discussion about who has the best value for money, it's about who has the fastest cpus and there is no contest.

Firstly the i7 920 isn't that bad price wise and secondly the OP didn't mention anything about band for buck. If someone asked you which rules with power, a corsa lite or a Bugatti Veyron you not going to say the corsa lite owns when it comes to bang for buck because they didn't ask which is best in regards to bang for buck, they asked which owns the other in performance.

This is true, Intel definitely has more power. :D

Thanks Ghost02 - if I was building a new system for myself I'd go AMD Dragon. But that is not the point of the OP.
