Internet choice?

Hey guys

So we had an iburst contract for 2 years (which sucked big time). I couldn't enjoy 1 online cod4 game without a 2 second delay! But fortunately the subscription expires the end of the month.

Now the problem is that. We'll need a new subscription, now my question is:
Which company should I go for?
Unfortunately we don't have telephone lines in our house (Does thus mean we can't get adsl?- sorry i'm a big time noob when it comes to internet connections).

I saw that CellC's got that special and it will be available the end of the month in our area. (Will the connection be fast enough for online gaming with no lag?)

Is there a wireless connection that's fast enough for gaming?

Thanks in advance! :)

Well I have heard people with a 3g card seems to be able to play games online.

Wireless is not the best because of the high latency.
Best would be to get adsl, but phone telkom and ask if you can get adsl.

But they'll have to install a telephone line right?

Is there a reason you don't want to get telephone line installed? As far as wireless gaming goes, it doesn't get a whole lot better than iBurst in my experience, and I have tested Neotel, 3G and iBurst. I was actually able to get latencies of around 100ms with iBurst, which is not too bad.

If you want to stick to wireless then iburst is your bet bet. I suggest you get a big ass antenna though.

Yeah my mom's a bit full sh@#, and she wants it to be as hassle free as possible, so in other words no telephone line for me...
We've currently got iburst and if I try to play mw2 on xbox live my latency is >500 which sucks!

But we've got the desktop modem which we recieved 2 years ago, has it improved substantially since?
With iburst is it possible to share the connection, so that my mom and I can use it at the same time?

Thanx tinman

Why do you say I need a big antenna? I've currently got good signal (modem shows green light and not flickering).
Will it improve the connection speed even if it's showing that it's already got good signal?

Considering I usually have 400 with a fixed line that's very impressive.

Myself and the majority of iBurst users on the iGame portal get 60 - 80 ms Pingtime
Signal can be optimized and prioritized into our dedicated servers, since Tin tested a while back we have also improved routing and latency specifically for wireless users on our network.
That said, having good signal is enough for downloading and streaming video etc, but having a strong CLEAN signal is what you need for gaming.
By using a Omni or directional antenna the signal quality is boosted as well as overall strength, this impacts latency as it reduces jitter.

The UTD you have should have both a USB and Ethernet connection, this answers the question of being able to share a connection, yes?

Thanx for the reply?

Ok so I'm a complete noob when it comes to connections!
I've tried connecting my mom's pc and mine via a hub simultaneously but it gave me an error that said only one connection allowed?
Is it maybe because I used a hub rather than a router? Sorry I'm really not clued up on this!

The multiple connection error is only when a user tries to force 2 non PPPOE connections on the modem
My best suggestion would be to call our callcentre and have one of the support agents help you set it up over the phone

The only real alternative to ADSL is WiMax. Telkom gives people that can't get telephone lines, Wimax and then there are other companies that use it as well, like Screamer.

I've had both Telkom and screamer Wimax and the telkom one is the better option as you can use any ISP with them. Check out the Wimax section in MyBB.

For only R351 give or take you can get a nice 384Kbps line and uncapped :) I never have issues on my DSL line

Get yourself a BROADBAND router with a WAN port. Now these routers come in various flavours. Wireless with 4 port LAN, no wireless, USB printer ports for sharing. Choose whichever suits you best. Then put a cat5 flylead into the LAN port on iburst modem and other end into WAN port on router. Setup router and voila. Pretty simple. If possible, let your router do auto assign of IPS, less hassle for you.

Just remember though, the more people on the router at the same time, the more they use your bandwidth, thus poorer gaming performance. Also, stop all your downloads and anything that might use unnecessary bandwidth whilst playing, like windows updates, AV updates, MSN, etc.

To improve signal, first figure out where the Iburst Antenna is you are connecting to. As in geographically. Then climb the roof and look to see if you can spot it from where you stand. If so, consider a outdoor directional antenna. If you can't physically see it, I would rather go the external omni route. SHould make a difference to your gaming, but it all being wireless, remember, there are NO/ZERO guarantees of improvement. Wireless is very unpredictable.

384k lines are becoming a major issue for many gamers locally, as they seem to have high latency. And local servers are getting strict re latencies online and many 384k line gamers simply can not maintain a connection anymore.

I havn't found any problems unless my house mate is downloading stuff off the web :)

I'm seeing it more and more, especially on MoH, users getting kicked for high pings. Especially on the iGame servers. And don't get me wrong, I think it's a good thing. High latency users affect non high latency users.
