internet Screwed up 2day

I just posted in the Thread killer.

I had over 70 calls today sofar regarding internet and mail.

Its hte april fools virus thing.

If you open ananzi.com, famous website you will see even that has been hacked.

Lots and lots of ppl complaining about Full downtime, or intermittent connections.
 
Yep, the conficker virus. People were warned well in advance. It's been spreading since end last year 2008.

Downadup/Conficker to possibly deliver global payload on 01 April 2009

In late 2008 Downadup/Conficker started to spread – it primarily exploited a MS vulnerability prevalent in every Windows OS since Windows 2000. Through a few more variants and after a few more months, the infections are said to be on 10-15 million machines currently. We have not seen a globally widespread infection like this for a few years – and the most concerning factor is that no one knows exactly what Downadup/Conficker is going to do, no one knows what the payload will be.

Once a day, Downadup/Conficker may contact one of 50,000 URLs to download files starting on April 1, 2009. Not only could this mean a huge DDOS attack on the Internet, but the instructions that will subsequently be pulled down to infected machines are unknown. We can only prepare for the worst and hope that this is only a practical joke.

This caused serious DNS issues, especially on SAIX side and upstream.

There are several fixes / work-arounds / preventions available - disabling auto-run (not the MS way!), running av with good protection levels (i.e. web-threat protection), making sure systems are patched (OS), admin passwords are not weak, etc.

SAIX should pay more attention next time.
They managed to resolve it a little while ago.

The Internet in general may still be affected though due to the payload. Expect slow Internet performance (yes, even slower than usual! :eek:) over the next few days, possibly even weeks.

EDIT: it's been fixed a little while ago, before 1pm.

My dad actually phoned me this morning saying he couldn't connect to the internet. Spent like 20 minutes going through all his settings only to find out that it's a SAIX/virus issue. :rolleyes:

He phoned me now saying everything seems to be working again.
 
Telkom says DNS issues caused ADSL problems this morning

Telkom ADSL users across the country were experiencing problems accessing international resources this morning. Telkom confirmed that a DNS issue was reported early today, causing connectivity and browsing issues to local and international websites.

Telkom engineers started working on the problem around 07:30 and the problems were resolved at 10:45. According to Telkom users should not experience any further problems related to this issue.

In an unrelated issue a cable break in Lynwood Glen means that ADSL users in the area will have no access to services. Users with the following area codes are affected: (012) 348, (012) 361, (012) 365, (012) 368.

Please note that in light of this article, a large amount of users are still experiencing the same symptoms across the country.

Yeah I had grief the whole morning, couldnt work out what the heck was going on. Sounds like it effected a lot of people.
