Introducing Vulkan - the future of open-platform gaming technology

Whatever happened to the lofty promises of Mantle? Everyone was all hyped and happy there was a new API on the scene to compete against Direct X, yet after the excitement died down, not a single peep was ever heard from it again. Is it being used to the point that Direct X is loosing market share? And more importantly, will Vulkan then learn from the failing that was Mantle and become something that's actually competitive?

AMD gave up on Mantle but it now lives on in Vulkan.
 
Lets hope the adoption rate of Games and the work done on this does not cease, would love to see a decent contender , I wouldn't be surprised if this died out again or if microsoft themselves don't just make a low-level api if that happens it will crush the competition

Yeah, I got that from the article, and I looked and found the MyGaming article which states that AMD just gave up on Mantle all-together. So Mantle lives on in the form of Vulkan, yet this article here explains Mantle in great detail. There are other MyGaming articles about the performance increase from Mantle, yet here we sit, in a world without Mantle, despite its promises.

So Mantle came with all these claim, yet it never picked off. Now it's pretty much just renamed and rebranded to Vulkan, and all I hope is that they don't go the same way as Mantle did. Mantle was abolished for a reason, a reason Vulkan needs to learn from and not make the same mistakes.

Isn't Direct X Microsoft's low-level API?

I think it may have been a combination of not enough game engines and thereby games using it. If Epic had added support for Mantle with it's Unreal engine then it may have taken off.

Also part of the problem was that one of the high profile games to use Mantle was BF4 which unfortunately was a buggy mess for quite a long time until Dice fixed it. Having a buggy/lacklustre experience using Mantle when it's supposed to give you better performance is not a good selling point.

I think the biggest nail in the coffin was DX12 itself - being built as an efficient, low level API rather than just added features on top of the previous DX's. It seems that what Mantle could do, DX12 could do too, plus Nvidia doubled-down on focusing on DX rather than develop their own low-level API so MS had their support from a hardware vendors point of view. AMD would then need to have driver support for Mantle and DX12 whilst team green could focus on optimising DX.
