Is gaming an addiction?

There are tons of irate parents and scientists who say that 'gaming' in general is addictive, and that gaming for more than an hour a day is bad for your health, I personally don't believe it, but what do you guys think?:wtf::D

I think it depends on the person. I know some people who I think are addicted to games.

I play when I get time to and if I don't get time then it doesn't bother me. I've seen people get angry when you interrupt their game time though.

I think it definitely is addictive. Not for me though, I can quit anytime I want.

... right after this turn! :p

An hour of gaming on weekdays is about as much time working class people have for gaming.
However, weekends and public holidays are completely different. I'm probably the unhealthiest person in the city if what these parents claim is true. :o

haha I get angry when I get interrupted :p but thats because I have to move.
I am addicted to you

I don't think I'd ever want to quit, not out of addiction, but pure bliss entertainment...:)

That's the thing, for me it's about passion for gaming, rather than an addiction. Even when I don't feel like playing anything, I still like to follow gaming news and have discussions about it. There definitely are people who go way overboard though, like selling their children to play WoW, or worse.

I agree it definitely can be addictive. My brother in law is definitely addicted. He comes home from work and within 5 minutes is in front of the TV playing online competitively, no helping the wife with the kids or preparing food. And you haven't seen grumpy until you try and pull him away.

I think that addiction is heavily dependant on the personality of the individual--some people are significantly more inclined toward addiction than others.

I base that notion off of the fact that I've never become addicted to anything (that I'm aware of, at least) so I can't really relate to how it feels to be addicted to anything.

Gaming, for example, is something I very much enjoy, but it's neither the crux of my existence nor something I feel compelled to do. It's something I do because I consider it a great escape from reality and something that excites my imagination.

Also, I feel that most people who accuse gaming, internet, media, etc for "addiction" don't understand the medium to begin with, or the real-life factors that might lead an individual to seek a permanent form of escapism.

The question, "Is gaming an addiction?" is one that dodges far too many complex factors involved in what forms an addiction. However, it could be simplified by saying that while it can be an addiction, in itself it isn't one.

Nah, I can quit any. FFS WHY WON'T THIS LOADING SCREEN GO FASTER!

That isn't always addiction. It could be depression...

maybe people prefer their lives online and in games and use that as an escape from reality, i know personally what a good escape it can be. That said one can actually use anything as an escape, some people might do it because you can do things in games that you cant do in reality and if something goes terribly wrong you can just restart :)

It depends on the individual(s).

Gaming can be seen as an addiction when it takes over daily life. Disrupting chores and responsibilities and other important tasks that need to be done instead.

If done for fun, fine. If detrimentally disruptive, then no.

No more than kids and whatsapp or watching TV.

Everything can be deemed an addiction if gaming is defined as an addiction. I mean you get people who love Facebook, selfies and instagram. I say if we are gonna define excessive as an obsession then what are we gonna call cellphones.
