Is it just me or is everyone blind to the obvious?

It would be interesting to have an activity comp open to new guys only. If the new guy makes a good impression then regulars will help him and if they are spamming then nothing. If the regulars have nothing to gain then we should see less distrust to the new guys (there is no regular being pushed out to a one week wonder).

It does make it sound very elitist though, the 'regulars' have all the power. Maybe that's how communities operate in real life????

I think we are really over complicating this on so many levels. This is a gaming forum and an important 'meeting' place for is, but some of the posts really make things sound like this is life or death stuff. Perhaps we all need to pause for a while and get some perspective?

Sorry it was not meant to sound that way in an form. I'm just trying to take recurring rants into account and cut them off. There is no silver bullet, but I'm sure we can add options to the mix that suit various needs and wants.

Bit too much like new kid in the old class.

Yes and no: The question is if this post-a-lot/create-a-thread comps does not work then how do you attract and inspire to post?

Its a bit like garbage in, garbage out and it is when these comps start one would rather hide in the TK till its over for obvious reasons.

Totally understood what you were proposing, no need to apologise. I was merely trying to point out how some may perceive that.

I am probably in the minority here, but I think that for the most part this approach does work. Sure I've been a bit irritated by some of the newbies posts, but if you look past the competition incentive, most newbies (yes all of us) spammed or necro'd some thread out of pure ignorance. And if you look at some of the post made by established members, they are just as bad, but because they are not new we have higher tolerance levels for this behavior.

I would have expected the more regular folk to have higher tolerance levels as we've been there before and will be there a couple of times more this here, but this has not been the case. My 2c FWIW.

Random post about something vaguely relevant and a question at the end to continue the random useless conversation wasting time of anyone who opens the thread.

Well, the guy currently in 2nd place made his first post on 14 January or something. He's made 232 since then. Spam much? :p

On this whole note I'm reading and get this thread:

http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/17518-Online-retailer-ratings/page9

in the list and see that a guy was moaned at for necroing it. Now me being new also I've never seen that thread and also wanted to put in a good word for Takealot but worried about the possible backlash, so I'm not going to bother. There have been other threads like that

That's how I feel here, and I'm not even trying for the competition.

How long have comps on MyG been using this method of increasing activity to win?

I've been on here since November 2011. Not overly active, only posting when I find things interesting - most of the members of this community are like that.

These kind of comps, however, pull in the masses, and they generally post mindless crap just to get their post count up. Problem is, when the comp is over, we never see them on here again. Makes you wonder what the point was.

Not sure how long they've been running these activity contests. I'm not sure if it's a method I like, however - the reasons are pretty obvious.

Welcome, and enjoy your stay.

Don't worry about things like that tbh: I do it from time-to-time, too. I see something that interests me, and I'll throw my 2c in just cause I can, regardless of how old the thread is. The issue, I think, is with the sudden influx of noobs just for the comp, necroing dozens of threads just to get their post count up.

Yep that was me it sometimes feels like I'm back in High school going to the principles office and not on a gaming forum. Some of you guys need to get over your selves.

Nothing wrong with a necro when you have something to add .... everyone does it. The only time it's facepalm is when someone posts crap for the sake of posting crap in a necro.

You can never go wrong using Takealot best online store by far.

Like that. The thread is a feedback thread, not some random "Oh this store is best" thread.

I don't think you can necro a sticky, it's on the first page always for a reason. I do believe the post was pointless though since it is for Takealot and everybody knows em. I believe the thread was more built for the rebeltech, titan-ice, bios online size resellers and to report the bad guys. But if you want to repeat takealot for 50th time then go ahead if you have to.

Naaah, your views are quite balanced IMHO.

Perhaps then a little attitude adjustment is in order and where those posts crop up just RBP 'em.

Yes getting over oneself is part of the solution but also respecting forum etiquette would help as well ;)

He's not entirely wrong, though. Some people here do make it their job to go looking for what others are doing wrong and then point it out as if they expect some kind of noddy badge. I mean, complaining about a 'necro' in a sticky thread? Seriously?

The biggest gripe with necroing threads is that it brings them back to the front page and inadvertently tricks unwary people into thinking it's a new thread. A sticky thread is on the front page all the time, so even if someone makes a 'worthless' post in it, it doesn't really matter because it's not being dredged up from page 20.

I don't think my post implied he was wrong at all. If you are only going to pick up on individual posts/instances then point made, but in a broader context there's just been to much of spamming and moaning in general this week.

Leave him, he has his own agenda this week. The guy who outed the necro was also one of the newer guys who I have yet to see go after people just to point out their wrong doings. So it's kinda like clive is finding links where ever he can and is going out of his way to make people out to be assholes only here to cause sh't for fun.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that you said he was wrong, just that I get where he's coming from. Everyone had to start out on the forum at some time and we shouldn't forget that. The onus is just as much on new members to try and follow the forum rules and forum etiquette as it is on the rest of us not to be complete douchenozzles every time a newbie makes a mistake.

I was more or less agreeing with you, so I'm not entirely sure what point I was trying to drive home last night. I'll just chalk it up to posting when I'm tired then.

"Yeah yeah, do it Ike, do it! Now's your chance to get back at big bad Clive for calling you an anal hallmonitor! Say something to try and undermine him!"

Oh Ike, for all our past differences I will admit that you do at least supply me with a lot of laughs, even if you do so inadvertently. The forum wouldn't be the same without you. ;)

Let's stop fighting guys. Fun community with a decent handful of newbies, think we can make this work well. I've yet to dislike anyone here, which doesn't take a lot for me. You guys have a good crowd and it's sad to see Lyt so heavily affected by this.
