Is it just me ...

... that is a professional spawner?

I have tried numerous games online (xbox 360 & PC), and I spend 99% of the time spawning. Do I have a bulls eye on my back ?

I really want to enjoy online play, but all I do is die :( Any hints out there how I can retain my life in FPS? Or do I just suck?

It's coming to there point where I wonder why am I paying for the Xbox Live service if I only race online about once a month.

There are guides to get better if you can find some. Plus IF the game has bots try that to practice. Or maybe get some friends and take it easy and say you want to learn / try things out.

I agree, when you jump into a new game where people are already good, you will pop ALL the time, which is frustrating till you get better. All you can do is keep trying and you should get better.

Hmmm.... Have you tried Team Fortress 2, its got respawn invulnerability =) Seriously though, I think that's probably the most friendly introduction to competitive online shooting that there is (just don't play the spy as a newcomer, one of the toughest classes to not go splat with). Left 4 Dead 1/2 is also a lot of fun in 4 player co-op and versus is quite easy to get into.

Well 1st thing to rember is to play only on local servers and games. Overseas servers tend to have ping rates of 500 or more. Basicly what that means, when you click to fire your mouse, it takes 500/1000 of a second for it to register as a hit on the server and than back to your screen.

Also try to start out as a camper if your completely new to FPS games, just try and hide in corner or somewhere were you can see a good portion of the map. Ignore the "Fucking camper" idiots who aren't smart enough to look before they move.

What games do you play and on what platform?

The easiest and possibly best way to improve is to play team based games. Join us with some friendly, helpful people and ask them to give you some pointers. When I first started playing BF2 online, I was an awesome n00b - got pwned by everyone. I hooked up with guys from =BFB= and another clan called MeRC and those guys were cool enough to help me out and show me the ropes. Since then I've always tried my best to help anyone who asks for it.

Most online gamers are pretty cool and should help you out as long as you show them respect and listen to what they teach you.

I started off on BF2. I also tried my hand at Crysis Wars where I didn't do so badly. There I actually lasted a couple of minutes before kicking the bucket.

But now I'm into Xbox360 gaming and have tried :
MW COD
MW COD 2
GOW 2

I actually sold all 3 the above games because of how badly I did. I got Bioshock 2 now, which I hope will go better as I love Bioshock.

I'm basically down to FPS & racing (Forza) as I'm not fond of tactical games (ie starcraft etc)

PS - on asking buddies to play with me, doesn't help. My kind of buddies gets me in a match (to help me out) and then shoots the seven days of shit out of me.

Team based is the way to go to learn quick, stick with someone that's good and do as they do, also the more you play the more you get to learn the different maps and where your best spot is to stay alive. When i got my xbox last year I was terrible at shooters, learned from playing team based GoW2 the guys(and gals) online really helped me and I really started enjoying it.

Most of the fun for me from playing online is from the awesome people I play with.

Like I said, TF2 and L4D 1/2. Those games will ease you into competitive shooting and both have very strong local communities on PC, TF2 more so. All of the games you mentioned you've tried out aren't exactly ideal starting points if your struggling with online shooters.

Another good starting point is the single player. When you can play games like CoD4 in veteran, that you've finished your basic training for online multiplayer.

Have you considered that it might be the fact that you're using a controller to play FPS games? I know I can't play a FPS on my Xbox because I need a keyboard and mouse.

Heh, selling those games isn't going to help you get any better. I get the impression you give up too quickly. ;P

It's a shame, actually, as playing on a good team in Gears of War 2 can improve your game dramatically. It's an easy game to get into.

I suggest training up by playing single player games on harder difficulties, although I'd hasten to add that - as you've probably realised - online multiplayer is a significantly different experience. Also, try avoiding ranked matches - it's where the more serious business gamers tend to play. Try playing in private matches with friends instead, and if your friends aren't helping you out, get new friends. Also, stick with team games for the moment, because going it lone wolf if you're not much good is only going to frustrate you.

You might also want to try fiddling with the stick sensitivity on your Xbox controller. Since I come from a PC gaming background, I'm used to moving my view very quickly. As such, in games that support sensitivity adjustment, I tend to play with this up very high.

This is an interesting point. I have been thinking about it this week, as I have a good friend who has just bought Modern Warfare 2 and naturally, is getting owned in online matches.

It's enough to put most off understandably. However, my advice is to stick it out for a month or two, play often enough, and actually think about it when you play. Tips like concentrating your eyes on the crosshair, and slowly working your way clockwise around the map, ducking between cover and just being carefull can go a long way. Learn the maps, and just be cautious in the begining. You will soon learn how to play a map, where to avoid, and how to flank your enemies.

Also, I know with PC gaming that making sure your mouse sensitivity is just right for you, is very important when playing online.

But trust me, if you give it time, you will see an improvement, and when you get to the point that you are consistently achieving a healthy KD ratio in games, it becomes a lot of fun. However, it would not be as rewarding if it came easily.

Ja i agree tinman, 90% of the multiplayer fps games I've bought over the last few years, I get pwned for at least the 1st 10 hours of gameplay.
You really have to stick it out... though, with MW2, I can't compete with the Veterans.... even after a couple of hours/days/weeks I have no chance. . . I'm getting too old for this shizzle :p

It's not that I give up easily, you can ask the guys on the Xbox-360 forum about Forza, I constantly come last, but I still race as I enjoy it.

It's just the games I've played so far online I haven't enjoyed online. Come to think of it, I haven't even enjoyed the single player of the one's I've tried online (ie MW2 / GOW2 etc). If I don't enjoy the games when I play it, it's not worth playing.

Typical me though, the FPS I do like playing over and over, either don't have multiplayer or no one is playing it  . ie, Prey, Dead Space, Bioshock.

On an up note, I got Bioshock 2 last week, which I enjoy and will give a bash (or let the guys bash me) this weekend.

As I am a PC traitor into XBox, it also took me a while to get used to the controls. However, I didn't know you could set the sensitivity - I will check it out tonight.

I don't get much gaming as my boyfriend complains that he never sees me (blah blah blah - > I swear he has some female genes in him), so I have had to cut down on my gaming time. I used to play almost every night, but am currently only getting in about 2-3 hours two nights a week :( . At least with the Rugby / F1 currently on the go, that should influence my gaming time very positively. :o

Miss Xeno, I feel your pain.

I absolutely SUCK at console FPS.

I own 12 Xbox360 titles ...

8/12 of my games are Racers,
1 is a flight combat game (Hawx)
1 an RPG (Fable)
1 a First Person runner (Mirror's edge)
1 is Bad company, being the only FPS ...

but as Azimuth told me ... I need to spend more and more time on console FPS's and then I'll ease into it.

Xeno, i feel your pain. I used to feel like that when i started playing COD4 on iGame servers. I got my behind kicked good.

But i got better and can handle my mp5 okay now :) Just don't give up, put as much time into the game(s) as you can and ENJOY yourself.

I am happy to report that I found my online FPS - Bioshock 2.

I enjoyed it so much that I didn't get much single player mode in & got to level 9 in Mulitplayer. Now just waiting for some of the local oaks to join in. :)
