Is it still worth it to upgrade your PC

id rather buy just below topest or go for what is mid range when upgrading my pc as it is not really worth to go zomg top and fastest over every thing VS life span of product before it is dated.

I agree necuno. I have a Q6600 780i board GTX 280 and a 700W(modular) psu. Bought after the hype, only set me back R7000.

I bough a Q9450 and GTX280 +- a year ago and my games are still running super fine. I think it will last me another year or more.

I've got the same DiceAir - I think we're good for more than a year.
I've still got another machine with 8800GT 512M and it can run all the current games without any problems - not all on full, but most.

You need to remember that developers also want Maximum markety penetration to get their money back for the development. So they really try hard to make games run on older hardware so that they get more money. So when you buy a Top end card like a GTX280 in our case, you'll be able to play games for 4+ years since developers will be making games in 4 years time that can still run on mid-range GTX2xxx generation cards @ least.

well, my rig still runs all the new games fine and it is >2 years old (C2D 6400 & 8800GT).
so yes - up to today it still ran everything fine on high quality (even though its >2years old!)
just recently upgraded my CPU to a Q9550 and today i upgraded my GFX to a HD5850.
Total of 5 grand (2k for cpu and 3k for gfx) and i'm set for another 2 years (at LEAST)!

Good thing is you can upgrade in phases - 1 month do the cpu, 2 months later the gfx, etc.
so yes, the value in upgrading is real good - BUT you must know how to buy, and when to buy!
Too many ppl buy the 'wrong' upgrades and then it costs them a fortune to upgrade again because they didnt do their research...

I bought a PC for atleast R6000 and I can still play all the latest titles, big secret of upgrading is concentrating on the mainboard, if you got that right in the beginning then your set for atleast a good old 4 years.

I also got my pc bout 2 years back. Still able to run almost all games muduim/high. I suspect it wont be truelly nessasary to get a upgrade for a while(Least nother 2 years).

IMO unless you want to play the PC (Exclusive) titles full details, its not worth it as most games are developed cross platform and any relatively decient (2year old pc) should be able to handle that. But hey... if you have the cash.. who doesnt love eye candy?

And u seem to forget, yes its nice to pay R4k for a Ps3. but the games cost R800 each.

ORLY?

NFS Shift: R574

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: R518

Brutal Legend: R530

Uncharted 2: R600

IMHO you cannot go wrong with a new PS3 Slim at the moment: full gaming rig and Blu Ray player at the cost of a graphics card.

Give in to the dark side.

Nobody can argue with that. I love my pc gaming but the PS3 Slim is a great option right now.

Hmmmm. The thing with upgrading is you have two choices. You can upgrade regularly, to stay on top of the latest hardware or you can sit with your hardware for two-three years and then just have one huge ass upgrade at the end of.

Personally, i prefer the upgrade-regularly route. For a number of reasons, really:

1) If that money for a new rig was to sit in my account for two-three years, it would get spent on other stuff first.

2) I like playing all the latest games at max detail, and more importantly, with decent FPS.

3) If you're smart about it, you can get brand new, next generation hardware with a very small pay in. Just need to time the sale of the old hardware properly.

4) It's like having christmas. Twice or three times a year :p

5) If you upgrade regularly, you tend to stay on top of hardware releases and know what is the best bang-for-buck at the time. If you're out of the market for two years, it takes quite a long time to get caught up on the latest hardware, which necessitates a lot of sitting down and reading. Generally, i don't have free time in such large quantities.

Anyway, my current plan is to upgrade my 2 X 4890s to 2 X 5870s. Very interested to see if my current processor bottlenecks the cards badly. If so, i'll have to upgrade the cpu/mobo/ram too. Oh well.

About 2 years back, I bought myself a TOP OF THE RANGE compo, and paid well over R16000 for it. Now, 2 years later, I struggle playing the new games that come out. And selling it is not an option, as I will get next to nothing for it.

So I keep on thinking... WHY DIDN'T I BUY MYSELF A CONSOLE!!! What do you guys think?

What are the specs of what you bought...? U seem to be avoiding the question :p

Tell us and then we can see where u went wrong, then others can learn from your mistake...
