Is it time to update yet?...

Death in a Can

Hi guys
I have a x56 mobo, with intel 920 cpu, 6gb drr3 1600 ram and 9800gt (512mb ddr3) gfx card and I was wondering if it is time time to upgrade, is the performance from intels latest tech that much better that i require an upgrade or should i just upgrade my gfx card and chill for a few years, any advice welcome

Hi :)

What CPU and Motherboard is it? Was it high end for its time?
Also think about what you do with your computer and have you stretched the limit of your computer in performance aspects?

I am asking you this because you might have enough life left in your components to only have to upgrade when Intel and AMD release their next CPUs.

Remember that upgrading at certain times also depends on your budget as the Intel Extreme CPUs come out later.

Anyway thats my 2 cents :)
I hope I helped.

Its only time to upgrade when your latest favourite game can only be run on medium settings.

If you can play everything you're interested in just fine then no need to upgrade just yet.

Guessing the 920 is a core i7? Which is still good for gaming even today, you won't see much of a major boost moving to haswell. I would recommend that you get a HD7850 to replace the 9800GT. Your games will fly for a good year or two to come.

Yeah the graphics card needs a change, it's way long in the tooth. Maybe also get an SSD. Take the CPU to 4ghz and add another 6gb ram. But I think those 920s were beasts in the day and it'll still hold up.

For now you're okay CPU-wise. If you want some newer features like USB 3.0, faster boot times and updated driver support, then I'd suggest waiting for Intel's Ivy Bridge-E family to debut later this year. If you invested into the high-end so long ago, chances are you're willing to do it again to make the rig last longer. Ivy Bridge-E will work on current X79 motherboards and is very well-featured. If you want to save money rather, your i7-920 will be good to go for another year even without overclocking it, but at that point I do recommend an upgrade.

If you're looking for a graphics update, I do suggest looking into it. If you're on a 1080p monitor, consider a Nvidia GTX660 Ti or a AMD Radeon HD7950. Both cards are more than ten times faster than the 9800GT and well worth the money. Do you play games at all?

Yeah I would hold on to everything except the gpu, depending on your budget (worked out on 18 months of pc spending as thats how long your cpu will last before it really shows its age and being willing to give the pc some wallet love).
The gpu is a big bottleneck so upgrade to something that will last a few years, R2500 upwards

Please give better info on your current equipment if at all possible

Example : MSI X56 etc etc

Easier to help you that way.
What kind of budget do you have for a future upgrade?

Yep the reason why I havent upgraded here since I can still play Starcraft 2 and LoL with High/Ultra settings so dont need to upgrade yet unless its to stop this irritating fan sound my laptop makes when gaming which it had since 3 months old :D.

2.53 Dual core
1 gig Nvidia 9600m gt
4 gig ram

Seems to do well in games with 30-60 fps.

I also have a 920 CPU, it's a 2.67 GHz i7 - Quad core with hyperthreading. My board does not support SATA3 or USB3, but no way am I paying 8k to replace the holy trinity just for that, with no real massive gains in terms of cpu speed.

I would suggest getting a better graphics card, I have the 7950 and can play whatever I want at awesome resolutions.

Hope this helps!
