Is the RTS genre dying?

Red Alert 3 killed it for me. I absolutely hated the allies on the single player mode. I like to build up a massive force and then storm the enemies base, but what I found is that the AI allies would attack right away, so by the time I had built up my forces, they had pretty much destroyed the enemy, so all that was left to do was ride through taking out a barracks, perhaps three troops and whatever else was left. I think they wanted you to attack constantly, but I don't enjoy playing like that.

I don't think I ever played Red Alert 3, but ya, being a strategy game, you should be able to play with whatever strategy you want to, not be forced into all out assault all the time, and if the AI managed to basically beat the enemy without help from you, then what's the point...

That's exactly how I felt. The skirmishes were amazing though. They were really challenging, especially on a harder difficulty- that to me was worth the price of the game.

Did any of you ever play KKND back in the day? That was a beast.

I've just reinstalled the Warhammer: Dawn of War and DoW 2 series. There's been a few sales of them around lately. I'd really recommend them if you like RTS. DoW 2 moves from a more traditional RTS to a somewhat RTRPG format - a bit like Warcraft 3. Not to mention - co-op campaigns!

Love DoW. Playing The campaign now. I'm not sure I like DoW II Retribution, although I only put 2 hours in. Not sure what the difference is between DoW II and DoW Retribution? It's confusing...

It'll be fun to play sometime:)

lol retribution is a stand alone expansion for dow 2/ they tried to bring it back to how the original dow was with bigger armies. Dow 2 was a squad based rts.

nope I do not think blizzard will take warcraft back to its roots as a RTS. I think we have better chance that we will see WoW 2 or its replacement. MOBA are fun and like 15 to 30 min long. The problem with RTS ussaully they take a long time and lot of time. Shorter games are more popular. Like dota2/ Call of duty/ BattleField. Or games that can be played in short stints like most RPG's.

Blizzard announced, I think last year, they have officially canceled their WoW replacement.

In regards to this thread, RTS, just don't find them as fun as I use to. I have enjoyed the Warhammer squad based ones a little more, but still not something I spend all that much time with. Star-craft 2, just think it's too expensive for what it is, I haven't bothered with any of it's expansions even though I did enjoy it.

awesome game KKND

You know I was looking at some images last night, and it hasn't aged as much as some of the polygon games from that time. I was surprised. I would still play this. Would be nice if they ported it to android or brought out an HD version.
