Hey Guys,

Just want to find out on this Topic. Is there a company that rents lines beside Telkom and do we have to pay for a Telephone line and A ADSL line and why is that?

Phone telkom to find out if I can cancel my telephone line and just keep my ADSL line and they said no! Just want to find out if that is true?

Thanks

Telkom is the only supplier of ADSL lines. Even if you get your line rental done through an ISP, they still have to do it through Telokm. It's all Telkom infrastructure.

You have to take an analog voice line rental as a base to having an ADSL line rental. Why? Because Telkom is a monopoly and they say so. There is no technical reason why (although they will argue they have to recover cost on maintenance).

Ya it didnt make sence to me ether to have a analog voice line? They said to me one cant operate without the other???? Anyways saw Axxess has good rental deals at the moment! 2MB with telkom ( or the new 4mb ) is R299 and with Axxess its R 250. Not bad!

It basically works the same as a reseller.

Main place sells their stuff expensive to the general public
They sell it cheaper to the reseller so they can at least make some profit
Reseller sells it even cheaper to the public so they would rather buy from them.

Ya unfortunately with out the telkom phone line rental you cant get the adsl line rental... We are so desperately in need of a competitor to telkom its ridiculous... And even if we got a competitor they would take years to get their own infrastructure up and running...

This is the sad truth, I would love if Google Fibre would throw us a bone :P

Afrihost, ask them. You can pay line rental with them too.

Yeap, this^ Paying less R80 for rental with Afrihost than I did with Telkom.

Like others have said they are a monopoly and won't allow any other company access to the lines and exchanges so they the only way to go until they change their policies which I doubt will ever happen though since they got a cash cow.

The only alternative is 3g or wireless if you do not want to use Telkom's infrastructure.

Yeah Telkom has a monopoly on the bare-bone lines in our country.

Yeah and they are heavily invested in ensuring that it remains that way. A good, ethical competitor worse force them to actually provide a consistent and good service...and they can't have that

Hope one company will come here and push them out, they are exactly like DSTV where everyone is scared of doing something even Top TV failed.

Do you really need to double post everywhere, all the time? :)

Top tv failed, because the target group was for people with no enough money to buy dstv but never had enough channels to offer.

Telkom is going to fail because that can't handle all the people that want better speeds, better service ext.

One reason why I never went to Top TV is cause they were missing lots of my favourite sports channels and programs :p.

You cant compare a Successful monopoly like multichoice to the incompetent Telkom who are going backwards while being a monopoly. Its quite a feat really.lol
