City authorities in Johannesburg, South Africa's economic hub, have unveiled an ambitious plan to undo urban inequalities of the apartheid era and turn the continent's wealthiest city into the "New York of Africa".

City mayor Parks Tau says the 10-year scheme, which is set to cost some $10 billion (7.5 billion euros), will lead to a "new era" for Johannesburg and its 4.4 million inhabitants.

Plans are on the cards for an extensive new road and railroad network,...read more here: Johannesburg: New York of Africa

Wonderful news. Really happy for this. However, they are announcing all sorts of grand plans and initiatives.

But doesn't this smack of electioneering?

I hope they plan to fix the buildings in the city. Went there yesterday and about 60% of the buildings are in really bad shape.

Maybe this will be a start of something new

They had some good ideas for some of the buildings. Problem is they start a project and then we hear they run out of finance. The project grinds to a standstill. The vagrants come in and the place becomes a safety and security issue for passers-by. One of these is right next door to our office building. Pity. Hopefully this is the start of good things to come.

20 years after Apartheid ended and they still feel the need to blame Apartheid because they can't organise a decent piss-up in brewery. When will these idiots ever realise that they can't blame Apartheid for their own stuff ups.

Why only now? I heard in the JHB CBD that they use to have trams? Anyway they should be doing this all around the country in my opinion but just wondering who will be getting rich from it.

1. Why now? The elections are months away. Last minute rush to make themselves look like they're taking the city forward. ANC is a little worried about losing their majority in the Gauteng.

2. Trams. Yup. When they were doing the roads for Reya Vaya, i saw tracks on Harrison and President in the CBD. Was quite weird.

3. Definitely should be plans to take this right across the country. Urban decay needs to be reversed. Too many buildings be allowed to fall apart or be hijacked. It's a massive job from here though.

True about the elections. Parents would tell me how nice the Durban and Johannesburg CBD were back in the day and it makes me sad knowing what they have become.

Durban and Pietermaritzburg CBD's were awesome in their hay day. Safe, clean and a delight to frequent. Today. Not a chance.
But there is always hope for the future. I look forward to seeing the outcome their grand plan.
