JRPGs a dying genre?

As long as there are Japenese, there'll be JRPGs. :p

But unfortunately they all seem to be copies from themselves. And a copy from a copy from a copy from a copy starts to loose it's edge along the way. Hopefully they can survive long enough to see a resurgence.

It is just so odd coming from the era of the PS2 which had amazing JRPG's to this gen and its crap-tastic JRPG failures. The only title worthy of any praise is Tales of Vesperia, but sadly most don't even know it exists. Rather they are content to eat the crap that was FFXIII, largely for it resembling an action title more than a RPG. Or they delude themselves into thinking that Mass Effect (especially 2) was anything more than a 3rd person shooter with lots of talking in it, and NOT a real RPG.

It's not really the genre that is dying, it's the consumers that are changing. If anyone has noticed, with the new generation of consoles game a new generation of casual gamers and because they seem to be the majority market, there is a far less likelihood of JRPGs finding shore in the Western world amongst all the God's and Gear's of Wars. And motion-bloody-control.

The Japs are still releasing their quirky, JRPG types but because there is no longer such a big demand, we can't get our hands on them. It's true, people want big, flashy, Hollywood production values at the expense of what could be an epic, long, worth-your-every-hour-and-cent masterpiece. I still have yet a game to find that beats the sheer amount of enjoyment and quality that was brought about by Final Fantasy VII-X. Despite their graphics, they are still brilliant. Then there's the whole sandbox thing and the whole moral choice thing. It appears that something cannot be an RPG these days without them, and that RPGs are somehow bad without them. Frankly, I love JRPGs and I don't want them to go away. I'm busy playing Persona 4 now and despite being released fairly recently, this game is epic and my PS3 has taken to under my bed for the time being. The game, of course, just did not receive very much coverage and advertising, however, amongst all our giant Microsoft, EA and what-have-you splatter marks.

I agree gamers are changing, so are most of the games, but by the same standard JRPG's are not when they should at least be trying to. It is almost as if they are afraid to come out of the PS2 era. Sure the genre won't die anytime soon, but it is taking a knock on many fronts. Right now it seems the domain of the JRPG is handheld (DS primarily from what I can see).

Maybe another reason why JRPG's may be going downhill is the amounts of money needed to create a AAA PS3 / 360 title. Combine that with the length of a JRPG and you may have a budget to rival and exceed something like Red Dead Redemption's budget!

Right now Western and European Developers are primarily pushing gameplay forward when Asia had it in the bag quite recently. Its like they are stuck or something.

Perhaps I just get fed up with gaming from time to time touching on what you mentioned that about casual gamers.

Oh and Persona 4 FTW! :p

This is how I pretty much feel...
