Just Cause 2 - PC

I bought the game yesterday whilist I popped into Clearwater Mall with a friend. When I got home I decided to install it and have a go. The installation was pretty easy. It uses STEAM and luckily I already had STEAM installed so it all went well. Even the update it had to do after the disc install was very quick....not even a minute on my line.

I loaded the game up and set everything to max to see what horrible damage it would do to my machine's self esteem and it all went wrong from there. It actually refused to load the first mission of the game. It also crashed 10 seconds into any of the built-in game "benchmarks". Heck, I even got a DirectX OUT OF MEMORY error - lol.

So I did some quick searching online to see if anyone else was having the same issues as me and it really didn't look like it. Most other people were having issues due to old drivers etc. and that is something I know is not an issue on my side, I'm a driver whore :D

Then I read on one website, hidden away in a pile of text that you should try and turn off a feature called the "bokeh filter". This thing is a Nvidia only feature and simply blurs the far-away backgrounds to make it look a little prettier. The hilarious thing is, I am running to GTX280's in SLi so you'd think I would be happy to use this exclusive "Nvidia" feature. WRONG.

I turned off the "bokeh" filter and all my problems were solved. The game ran, and it ran WELL.

I played the first mission, albeit very short, and I have to say I'm predicting a LOT of fun with this game. I like the look of it, the cheesy secret-agent style soundtrack and the over-the-top stunts you can pull. Over all, I think this is finally a game I can sit back and relax with. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's very serious about being fun.

I think this game deserves a thumbs-up. Maybe some of our other forumites can tell us what it's like on the consoles?

I was terrified when the game gave me such hassles on start-up. I thought I finally got one of "those" games again. You know, those games which look awesome but simply suck so much that you can't even get them to work for 2 mins to see how crap they REALLY are. After sorting out the glitch and playing the game for a short while it made me laugh out loud it was so much fun. I can't remember when last I played a game that was just a plain blast. Bad Company 2 is awesome and I play it every night, but it's very serious. So much so that I sometimes have to take a break and relax a bit because things can get so hectic.

I'm about 17 hours into this game on PS3 and it is the shit. Most fun I've had with a game since Saint's Row II, the stuff you can do in this game is pretty awesome. The graphics are also really good, especially the environments, it looks damn good when you're flying a plane/chopper and looking at the landscape around you. Story is crap, voice acting is crap, but it doesn't matter. The sheer amount of fun you can have with this game more than makes up for the crappy story. This is the game to play if you're tired of all the "serious" games and just want to have some mindless fun.

LOL - I thought the voice acting and corny story line really adds to the feel of the game. It's totally rediculous and I think it's exactly what they were aiming for. THIS game is the reason why I play games. You say you're 17 hours into the game? Good grief, that's some epic game-time....it's good to know that it's not a short game. I suppose because it's so open ended you're free to play the way you want for as long as you want!

I want to play this but I also want to play supreme commander 2.

Geesh. Two totally different games there dude. It depends what you're in the mood for. I find this is a rediculously action packed game. Sort of like grand theft auto with a parachute and no hookers :)

Yes but I just want to play a game. I just crave to sit for hours all day and just play. I played the demo for supreme commander 2 and really liked it but this game looks to be fun.

I'm considering getting this but the first one was just too ridiculous for my liking. After I'd done the various stunts a few times I found the missions too mediocre to hold my attention.

Is there more of a story to follow this time around?

Yeah, when I checked my save game it showed 17 hours game-time and (I think, can't remember now) 15% complete. It is a pretty HUGE game and you are free to do whatever you like whenever you like. Sometimes I just mess about for an hour or two, exploring the world and blowing shit up. :p

Also, don't know if you know this, but the island from the LOST tv series is in the game, or at least a "tribute" island. It's the island in the top left hand corner of the map, if you fly over it your plane catches on fire, same thing for boats. You can also find the LOST plane wreck as well the hatch there. I have found the plane wreck, but I haven't managed to locate the hatch yet.

There is a story, but it isn't really that good. It's very cheesy and kinda lame, just like the voice-acting, but I have to agree with Neo, it does feel right for this game.

I find the combat pretty cool. It's not uber realistic as the games they're selling these days, but I mean, c'mon, this game isn't aiming for realism in the first place. I did have issues with the intro to the game. I've a newcomer to Just Cause and I had NO idea how to attack enemies or how to select and use explosives. The game sort of assumes that you know these things. I just checked the keyboard mappings to find my way and now it makes sense.

The combat is awesome man, although it gets quite difficult at times. You just have to stay on the move or you're dead. You can also kill the enemies in some creative ways with the grappling hook.

Played this game some more over the weekend. Flippen sweet and VERY open ended. I'm just amazed at how large the world is and how much you're allowed to do right from the start! The only confusing thing about this game is the fact that it's not very clear at times what you need to do....this is really a "do it like you want it" game....with very little guidance.

Been playing this over the weekend on PC as well, all I can say is "Wow". Had a braai at my place on Saturday with a bunch of "non-gamers" who quickly turned into a Just Cause 2 audience when I hooked the PC up to the HDTV, that alone is a feat =)

Environment is massive on a crazy scale and the environment graphics and visuals in the game are excellent. Seriously, the graphics are impressive maxxed out. Very open-ended, they give you an abundance of toys to play with in the sandbox they created. My personal favorite moment was the one mission where I had to assassinate a guy escaping in a helicopter, so I hijacked an airliner and flew quite high in the air and dive bombed the airliner into the helicopter and bailed out at the last second =) I got lucky of course, but I couldn't stop canning myself at the complete overkill.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and get this game.

So I got a copy of just cause 2 and it is pure awesome. The graphics are stunning and it is just pure 80s action movie style:D

Don't you think this is a bit of an underrated game? It's definitely one of those "sleeper" titles.

Yes totally. It is a game were you can sit back relax and just blow stuff up. I mean the casino mission was so much fun scaling a huge tower with a grappling hook. And it is very pretty, and if you take it with a pinch of salt you will enjoy it more. There is so much to do and see.
