It's early and i am pissed with mwebs throttling policy

nvm got it sorted but ja, mweb throttled us to 28kbps dial up speed for doing 110gb.

first time we went over 100gb. normal usage has always been 50gb 80 at a stretch with steam downloads.

but December was a bit more hectic then boom.

it sucks really, and it's over a 30 day rolling window, so to get usage down you need to essentially not use the internet for a whole month! to get it down to normal again :(

my folks are still paying for mweb, me? I have a afrihost account now which we will be using without them knowing.

bleh. seriously mweb, you were a great isp but this one slip made me lose a lot of respect

Of course we were mad for leaving mweb already in Aug/Sept 2013 when the shaper finished its trails and kicked in.

You may however find that Afrihost "normal" also applies the shape at times, well looking at mybb. Although Afrihost, openweb or even webafrica is already better than mweb...

I was with MWEB and had to keep below certain daily limits to not get threatening letters. Moved to Web africa and that went well for a while until this whole end of the year upgrade thing I guess they tried to get me to upgrade, so in came the threatening letters from them. As soon as I read them I phoned to cancel and got an Afrihost business account. Not looking back.

I don't mind a slight drop in speed but mweb did it scorched earth styles. Can't even browse properly

Tempted to do the same because of :

4mb uncapped..

if i can give you advice go openweb people they only shape torrents(p2p), Steam runs max, from 7 to 7 for business hours after that your line runs fully unshaped and on weekends it s from fri to mon morning fully unshaped. i'm at work so can't post my speeds atm, but i get about 2.79-2.98 on a 4mb line with a 2mb package and my steam has topped out on 989kb/s during the day in business hours

I've already tried Openweb and that account really annoyed me, in my case the account was useless during business hours. I've got screenshots of the constant disconnects while gaming. Really annoying since my schedule doesn't follow the normal 9-5.

Edit: While browsing myb found this: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/586900-Openweb-Gold-Slow
second post is just like my experience :/

Kwaai i also had issues with them in the beginning and i'm on the gamers king gold package and i also work weird hours and after the upgrade i had many a issue but after a re-sync and port recreate things are better, but they prioritize gaming all the time on the account i have. I was with afrihost for just a month and i couldn't even play wow on it so bad was my lat issues and eventually i was told that all uncapped accounts are being shaped due to a bandwidth allocation issue from mtn. So i moved the next month.

It's great that you're enjoying their product, I did struggle with them for about 2 weeks trying to sort out the issue which they didn't do so I cancelled.

Edit: I'm using the afrihost capped account, so I cannot comment on the uncapped product which I'm guessing you were using.

I recently moved to OpenWeb. I have the following good and bad comments about this:

Good:
- Their speedtest results look good

Bad:
- Torrents are still slow
- After hours downloads are not running at full speed. (At least on MWEB I got the full ~200Kbps after hours)
- The control panel does not have ANY indication of how much traffic you have done during a month
- Remote Desktop traffic is not prioritised. This was the case at MWEB, I think, as I could still get into my home pc when I was downloading stuff at full speed. Now on Openweb, I am almost unable to get in via RDP even when I am not downloading ANYTHING.

I moved to Afrihost form Mweb at the beginning of December and I can say that I've been very happy so far. Downloaded about 130GB's last month on a 4mb account and didn't experience any throttling (although I would guess that 130GB is nowhere near excessive on 4mb).

Been with Afrihost for years, best ISP out there! Just wish they'd show the 10Mbps crowd some discount loving.
