From vgchartz:

Thanks to Black Friday sales, Major Nelson was proud to announce that Microsoft has sold 2.5 million Kinect units in the first 25 days since launch. Not too shabby, Major. This comes after a successful million-selling first ten days, despite a lackluster Japanese launch.

Can this momentum be maintained all the way to 10 million Kinects sold in the first 100 days? I don't think sales really work like that, but it would be nice to see hardware sales in general finally pick up. Dang it, recession! At least Nintendo is still making some big holiday waves.

I know I'm happy with my purchase!

Is it as popular in SA? I find it hard to believe locals will rush out to purchase this for 2K.

But then again, they did spend 3.5 billion rand on marketing Kinect, so I'm not really surprised.

I've personally seen some massive interest in Kinect in my own friend base. The day before it launched a friend randomly called me asking me whether I'd recommend the Xbox or PS3, because he wanted to buy himself a console. My personal choice is of course the Xbox, so I told him to get himself one, but to wait one day until Kinect launched so he could pick up a console and Kinect for slightly more than a console alone.

Long story short he did, and he's very happy he did so. Not having already owned a console, he was blown away with Kinect and has been rushing out to buy games on regular occasions since getting his Xbox.

I realised exactly how popular Kinect could become when I and a group of about 10 other people were chilling at said friend's house after watching a DVD, and people who had not so much as seen an Xbox in the flesh before were saying they wanted to get one because Kinect's so fun. It really does have the ability to entertain an entire room of people.

Needless to say after that night I rushed out to get Kinect myself, and another friend plans on getting his this month after having tried mine.

Microsoft may have a huge marketing budget, but I think what will make Kinect popular is the knock-on effect as people start playing with the device at friends and family members and decide that they want in on the fun. A better line up of games will also do wonders towards convincing some people to get one (Gears of War 3 having Kinect support, for example, could be a massive boost).

Good points, Lydon - I must admit I am a PS3 guy but I was very impressed when I saw Kinect in action at a Music this past weekend.

I'm eagerly waiting to pick one up second hand at a cheaper price. I would say after xmas in a month or so the second hand market will start opening up...

MOVE never claimed to revolutionise the world of gaming..........

Thats pure M$ marketing talk.

The point I was trying to make is that both Move and kinect took existing ideas and improved on them, which I think is clever really. Look at the ipod, it was not the first mp3 player on the market but a little tweaking here and there and it ended up revolutionized mp3 players. I see the move and kinect following the same trend.

Side note - yes gears 3 is gonna rock :)

VGChartz have done an interesting comparison of what they predict actual sales figures of Move and Kinect to be:

There have been numerous reports over the last few days regarding Move and Kinect sales - Sony recently announced 4.1 million Move controllers shipped worldwide, while Microsoft announced an estimated 2.5 million Kinect cameras sold through to consumers, both as of the 27th November 2010.

On paper then, it looks like Move is clearly ahead in the race but how do the sell-through sales and unique systems actually compare?

Playstation Move

Move has now been out for 11 weeks in total and VGChartz estimates show that the total number of Move controllers sold-through is now just over 2.5 million units worldwide, with nearly 250,000 sold last week alone with holiday sales starting to pick up. Compared to the 4.1 million units shipped, this would suggest around 1.6 million units in the retail channel but not yet sold though, an estimate that Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter agrees with.

The second issue with Move is that many customers will be buying more than one controller - something that VGChartz has attempted to factor in to previous estimates to give a comparable figure in terms of userbase. Consumer polling carried out over a sample of 100 PlayStation Move owners shows that the average number of controllers per Move setup is 1.55. Using this, we can estimate that the number of unique Move-compatible PS3s out there is now just over 1.6 million worldwide.

Kinect

Kinect has now been out for 4 weeks in total and VGChartz estimates that the total number of Kinect cameras sold-through is also just over 2.5 million units worldwide, with 875,000 sold last week. Since each Kinect camera represents a unique customer to sell games to, there is no adjustment necessary as with Move for owners with multiple controllers.

Therefore, with 2.5 million unique Kinect customers and 1.6 million unique Move customers in homes worldwide, Kinect clearly has the edge at this point. Also with 4 weeks of sales compared to 11 weeks and with over three times as many sold last week, Kinect should be significantly ahead by the end of the year. In fact, after four weeks of release, the number of unique Move customers stood at 600,000 worldwide and Wii hardware sales at the same point in time stood at 1.65 million so Kinect has actually sold faster than both combined in these first few weeks.

Stay tuned to VGChartz for the latest Move and Kinect sales updates.

Thanks Lydon. Nope, I'll be getting two Kinect games next week. One for me and one for my wife. It's a funny thing... I'm getting married tomorrow. :D

I never owned a tv and got a nice big HD tv as a wedding present from my parents. So I thought, hell, what a good way for my new wife and I to have fun and that's why I got the XBox 360 and Kinect.

Points to Microsoft. I always preferred the PS3 as I liked the exclusives but the Kinect is just so much fun when there's more than one person involved.
