Eskom has asked the public to use electricity sparingly after one of its reactors at the Koeberg nuclear plant near Cape Town went down, the Cape Times reported on Friday.

"The power system is extremely tight at present, particularly during the evening peak hours between 6pm and 9pm," the power utility said.

It was unclear what had happened to the reactor but an official, who remained anonymous, said it had lost 900 megawatts of power and the fault was being investigated.

They should let them start playing nuclear plant simulator*.

*Goes and make the game.

From what I understand, they have a simulation of the plant running along side the running plant system. And it is being permanently compared to the simulated expectation and if there is a deviation from the expected an alarm is raised. Apart from that they also have and entire separate control system on stand by as well.
