not really pc hardware but what to take :D

1. led, lcd or plasma
2. 50/60 or 100/120hz
3. samsumg, sony or lg
4. 32" or 40"

main use gaming, movies, flicks and then tv of course.
room has average light volume.

was looking at samsumg 60hz lcd or led.

budget is around 6500

Minor technical detail, but I should point out both are LCD screen. The difference is the back-light: Either LED or CCFL. i.e. Its not a question of LCD vs LED.

As I understand it, you want a plasma...unless you've got something static displaying like a windows task bar...that'll burn in so plasma is no good. Then rather LED, or if necessary CCFL. Visually you'll struggle to tell the diff between LED & CCFL unless they are side by side. On balance LED is better though...less chance of flicker issues & associated maintenance costs.

I'd take a Samsung, then Sony then LG. Personal preference.

Naturally bigger is better, so 40".

Be sure to have a good look at the power consumption on the plasma though.

100/120...doesn't matter all that much. 50/60hz will be OK too though...the refresh rate isn't all that crucial for LCDs/Plasma...unless you're looking at 3D then it is. DSTV signal is at 24hz if I'm not mistaken.

I'd be looking for a mat edge lit LED Samsung 40" in your case. Too lazy to google if thats in the budget, but should be....but not by much.

Be sure to shop around...for some reason the range of prices for identical models is stupidly large for these things. I've seen the same screen for 6k and 14k.

Thanks HavocXphere, not too sure about the 60+ hz, I mean my current 23" lcd is also just but 60hz and it seems fine.

Its real tough to choose because there are so many. I would go for a Samsung LED if you can. I'm sure the 6000 or 5000 series would suffice. I have a D7000 46" LED, clarity is amazing. And it plays nearly every format (including .mkv) via USB or via the network

Correct for the most part, the refresh frequency is most noticible when watching sport on HD or fast action movies on BluRay. My suggestion would be to go for a 100+Hz 40+" LED

Yah..

I really like Samsung...then Sony...not a big LG fan. Samsung has by far the brightest panel...Sony has slightly smoother images.

Definitely get LED, the backlighting gives you a much crisper image.

The Hz thing is really not important. Most of what you display is running at 24Hz so the difference is very minor. Check out makro. You can definitely pick up a 40" Samsung LED for round that budget

My advice would be a Samsung plasma. I have one and if I had the money, I would honestly buy another. No matter how you feel about PostmanPot, he is right :D

Well, I would still like to see how bad this "blurr" is for 50/60hz tvs. Going to look around tomorrow...

So buying this one

for example would have me crucifying myself over blur ?

How close are you guys sitting to see the blur ?

On 50Hz, most probably. That is the issue with LCD's. Anything above 100Hz on a LCD won't be a problem. My advice is to see if you can get to a store and do a test for yourself or better yet, go to a friend's house and test your console there. I can tell you, though, that you won't get these issues on a plasma.

3-4K more for just that 100hz option. O well I'll go and inspect this myself :D

Honestly I would wait and spend a little more, I recently bought a samsung 47" D5500 and its AMAZING. The clarity on it is unmatched. I thought 100hz was a gimmick but boy was I wrong, everything is as smooth as butter, great for action movies and sport. You wont be able to back to 50hz once you have experienced 100hz or more. Heck the new samsung range comes with 600hz, that to me is an idication of where this technology is heading, dont get left behind.

There is one thing you cannot do online and that is buy a tv, you will need to go to the store and see for yourself. Just be careful, I've seen it many time where the more expensive models or those that make the salesperson the best commission will for example be playing a full HD blu ray while others might only have DSTV 720p footage.

Dont buy LCD, its an old technology, if it breaks in 2 -3 years you will be screwed.

Yeah. That's why I always advise people to go into stores to check it out for themselves before making a purchase. When I bought my plasma (which I just use for watching movies/series and normal TV), I took my hard drive with and played my media on all the TVs before deciding on one. It's the only way you will know. Nothing worse than paying so much money for something and it doesn't give you the ROI.

But the D5500 is not true 100hz, it's "fixed in software" or something like that. Apparently only 6 series is actual 100hz *shrugs*. Price isn't too much of an issue it's literally then 2 week wait or less than I could pickup a 8-9k lcd.

I can honestly tell you that plasma will play anything really well. With LCD, depending on the size of the media, you might get pixels etc. I tried many LCD's before deciding to go with plasma. It just looks so much better IMO.

LCD/LED don't get burnt in. Not sure I want to spent that amount on something that can get burnt in even if that's a remote chance.
