i have heard of that with planks being in the water but you would see them with the ripples for example from the Jet Ski

If you guys watch from 48 secs in, look closely at the water in front of him. It's pushed up slightly which indicates there must be a board they are running on.

EDIT: Also at 1:54min watch the point at where the guy runs into the water and then where the next guy fails completely. The point at which the first guy runs always has a successful attempt.
