List of ISP's in SA

Hey everybody!

I recently moved from the UK to SA. I want to get an internet connection sorted here asap but I have a problem...

Being from the UK, I have noo idea of the ISP's here and how they work. So I have a few questions lol.

Would it be possible if people could let me know the ISP's in SA?

I game a lot (Console and PC), I prefer to buy my games digital and i watch a lot of streams, Youtube, etc. For that I need uncapped. What would be the most cheapest and reliable ISP to get uncapped? (My max I will spend p/m is R1000).

How much would I need to pay for a phone line here?

If you guys/girls could help me out, I would really appreciate it!

The ISP are. Please be aware of the Fair usage Policy for uncapped, each isp has their own.

Cybersmart
Openweb people say they are a scam.
Axxess/Afrihost on the mtn backbone stay away from mtn backbone for gaming.
Webafrica they have their own backbone.
Mweb also own backbone but has gone from good to really bad.
Crystalweb heard good things from them.
Telkom SAIX backbone.

R135 for the telephone line.
Then another R165-R600 depending on the speed of the line.

Try not to take a 24month contract for data since its ever changing or if you want to move your data acount you can and your not stuck with one ISP.

Since the region where you are makes a huge diffrence. You can have endless trouble with one isp then switch to another and everything is 100% this is up to you to experement. 2-4 months is a good testing period.

Sorry for the late reply, been running all over the place!

Thanks for all the help! Just wondering though, would it be possible to get a 2-4 month contract with an ISP here?

Most isp are month to month.
Telkom is the one that normaly the one with long contract.
Just remembered vox is also an isp.
You can check out mybroadband.co.za for a article about isp performance should give you a good idea.

I think the telkom line rental is closer to R180/m than R135.
 
You will most likely need to get your line through Telkom if your going for conventional ADSL, then use your own ISP for the data.

Depending on your area you can look at some fibre options as well.

Yeah they aren't quickest bunch around. Hopefully wherever you live already has a phone line jack installed inside the house and it was just disabled, then they can just come and activate it.
If there is no jack or line going to the house, that can take a bit longer still.

PLEASE, to save yourself some headache, if Telkom do need to activate a line for you, make sure you tell them over and over you want it for ADSL and that they should activate ADSL on the line. I have heard of so many instances (including myself) where Telkom came and activated the phone line but did not activate the ADSL on it, so they had to come out again which resulted in more waiting.

I hope you come right quickly though. Once you have the line and it is activated, getting a data package from an ISP is quick, like 10 - 15mins and you're up and running.
 
Avoid Axxess like the plague. They used to be fairly decent, but more recently, their service is nothing short of awful. Their staff is very friendly, but utterly incompetent.

My 2¢.

Edit: Axxess is starting to come right. Looks like things are heading in the right direction, at the very least.
