Looking for a new graphics card

Hi everyone,
Its been a long time since I've been active on the forums (or even gaming),
becoming a father does that to you ;)

I still have my old hd radeon 6950 screencard and its a bit long in the tooth..

Ive also been out of the loop in terms of which graphics cards to get.

Im not biased about nvidia or ati, I just notice that on the benchmarks the top scores are on nvidia cards.

If I wanted to spend, say , R6000 , what would you recommend ?
1 mid to high end card or two cheaper cards in SLI ?

Any recommendations ?
 
I would say 1 high end card. 1 card setups are generally more stable and are less hassle, although drivers (especially from Nvidia) have improved for SLI/X-Fire.

For that price, you're looking at the GTX970 from Nvidia, or the 290X or 390 from AMD. At what resolution are you gaming at?

The GTX970 excels at 1080p gaming and has a lot of overclocking headroom, which the AMD cards don't have. At higher resolutions (1440p and 2160p) the AMD cards have the upper hand.

For R5300 you can get the Galax GTX970 EXOC, or for R6100 you can get the Galax GTX970 HOF.

The R9 290x starts at about R5400 and the R9 390 at about R5700.

For 1080p gaming I would say get the 970, and if you can, go for the HOF.

Any idea who stocks this though ? Galax GTX970 HOF ?
Only found wootware on google and they need to do a stock check, is this really difficult to find ?

Yeah I have only seen them stock that card locally. Perhaps just check with them when they will have stock again.

Note: it seems nvidia cards are struggling/performing worse than AMD cards with DX12, so perhaps more research is required, because you don't want to buy a nvidia card now and then struggle with playing dx12 games in the next year or so. :/
